Objective: To assess the presence of frailty and its relationship to sociodemographic and clinical characteristics in institutionalized elderly. Methods: Cross-sectional study with 54 elderly residents in long-stay institutions in the Northeast of Brazil. The data collection instruments were the Edmonton Frail Scale, socioeconomic assessmentand health profiles. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Chi-square test, with significance level of 0.05. Results: The mean age was 72.4 (± 8.5) years, 61.1% were male and 74.1% had some level of frailty. There were positive correlations between frailty, gender, age, comorbidities, body mass index and the need and amount of medicines. Conclusion: Frailty in institutionalized elderly is influenced by sociodemographic and clinical characteristics. ResumoObjetivo: Avaliar a presença de fragilidade e sua relação com as características sociodemográficas e clínicas em idosos institucionalizados. Métodos: Estudo transversal com 54 idosos residentes em instituição de longa permanência da região Nordeste do Brasil. Os instrumentos de coleta utilizados foram a Escala de Fragilidade de Edmonton e outro de perfil socioeconômico e de saúde. Os dados foram analisados através da estatística descritiva e do teste do Qui-quadrado, com nível de significância 0,05. Resultados: A média de idade foi de 72,4 (±8,5) anos, 61,1% eram do sexo masculino e 74,1% apresentaram algum nível de fragilidade. Houve correlações positivas entre fragilidade, sexo, idade, presença de comorbidades, índice de massa corporal e necessidade e quantidade de medicamentos. Conclusão: A fragilidade em idosos institucionalizados sofre influência das características sociodemográficas e clínicas.

OBJECTIVE: to verify the inter and intra-rater reproducibility of the Brazilian adapted version of the Edmonton Frail Scale (EFS) in an elderly group of residents. METHOD: in order to test the inter-rater reproducibility, two assessments were independently conducted by two researchers on the same day but at different times, in a sample of 103 elderly. Concerning the intra-rater reproducibility, the instrument was administered to 83 elderly (80.6% of the initial sample) by the same researcher in a time gap of 15 days between the two assessments. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: in relation to the inter-rater test, the Kappa was 0.81 (CI 0.61-1.00) and the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) corresponded to 0.87 (CI 0.82-0.91, p<0.001). In relation to the intra-rater test, the Kappa was 0.83 (CI 0.72-0.94) and the ICC 0.87 (CI 0.81-1.00, p<0.001). CONCLUSION: the results show that the EFS is reliable and can be used as a tool to improve geriatric nursing care in Brazil.

Analysis of frailty syndrome in primary care -Cross sectional study Objetivo: Avaliar a prevalência da síndrome da fragilidade em idosos atendidos na atenção primária à saúde no bairro Jardim Camanducaia, localizado no município de Amparo, SP, Brasil. Métodos: Realizou-se um estudo transversal, que incluiu uma amostra de 306 indivíduos de ambos os sexos, com idade de 65 anos ou mais, residentes no bairro Camanducaia em Amparo, SP, Brasil. Foram avaliados os dados referentes ao sexo, idade, doenças crônicas, desempenho cognitivo e o fenótipo da fragilidade, que considera os critérios de força de preensão, velocidade de marcha, nível de atividade física, perda de peso e fadiga. Resultados: Verificou-se na amostra o predomínio do sexo feminino (60%). Foram caracterizados como frágeis 21,5% dos pacientes investigados, 71,5% dos idosos foram classificados como pré-frágeis e 6% da amostra foi categorizada como não frágil. Conclusão: Observou-se uma alta prevalência de idosos frágeis e pré-frágeis, e esse achado aponta para a necessidade de avaliação periódica do idoso por uma equipe multidisciplinar. Dessa forma, estaria se fazendo uma prevenção da fragilidade, no intuito de reduzir ou minimizar os desfechos adversos na dimensão na saúde. We evaluated data on sex, age, chronic disease, cognitive performance, and the phenotype of frailty, which considered grip strength, gait speed, level of physical activity, weight loss and fatigue. Results: It was found a predominance of females (60%) in the sample. 21.5% of the studied patients were characterized as frail, 71.5% of elderly people have been classified as pre-frail, and 6% of the sample were categorized as non-frail. Conclusion: There was a high prevalence of frail and pre-frail elderly patients, and this finding points to the need for periodic evaluation of the elderly by a multidisciplinary team. Thus, frailty could be prevented, in order to reduce or minimize adverse outcomes concerning health.
