Transmissão vertical do HIV: expectativas e ações da gestante soropositiva

Abstract: This descriptive study with a qualitative approach was motivated by the high number of HIV positive children caused by perinatal transmission. The aim of this study was to identify HIV-infected pregnant women's expectations and actions concerning the pregnancy and the fetus. The sample consisted of 14 HIV-infected, asymptomatic pregnant women, in their third month, who were aware of their condition before getting pregnant. “…Epidemiologic data have shown that, in Brazil, the majority of AIDS cases in women occur in the lower scholarship stratum and between those with less qualified occupation. Correspondingly to this situation, a growing impoverishment of the population assaulted by HIV occurs as well (Moura, Praça, 2006). The studied sample has provided results that are similar to those of the literature (Castro et al, 2001;Sbalqueiro et al, 2004), where the mothers are young, in the reproductive phase, possess lower scholarship and familial revenue, with the majority being housewives and do not living a stable union.…”

“…However, since the epidemic began, new scientific knowledge has been accumulated, focused on prevention and treatment. Many representations have been questioned, but not necessarily changed with the same speed as the advancement of science (6) . Professionals have maintained a representation that the risk exists, but have always taken more care when knowing the HIV seropositivity of the patient (5) .…”
