OBJECTIVE: To analyze factors associated with self-reported sickness absenteeism among nursing workers. METHODS:Cross-sectional study with 1,509 workers from three public hospitals in the city of Rio de Janeiro (Southeastern Brazil) in 2006. Absenteeism was classifi ed in three levels: no day, a few days (1-9 days) and many days (≥ 10 days), based on the answer to a question of the work ability index questionnaire. The logistic regression analysis considered a conceptual model based on distal (socioeconomic status), intermediate I (occupational characteristics), intermediate II (lifestyle characteristics), and proximal (diseases and health conditions) determinants. RESULTS:The frequencies of sickness absenteeism were 20.3% and 16.6% for a few days and many days, respectively. Those who reported more than one job, musculoskeletal diseases and rated their health as poor or regular had higher odds of absenteeism. Compared to nurses, nursing assistants were less likely to mention a few days, and technicians were more likely to have many days of absence. Higher odds of mentioning many days of absence were observed among public servants, compared to contract workers (OR = 3.12; 95%CI 1.86;5.22), and among married (OR = 1.73; 95%CI 1.14;2.63) and separated, divorced and widowed individuals (OR = 2.06, 95%CI 1.27;3.35), compared to singles. CONCLUSIONS:Different variables were associated with the two forms of absenteeism, which suggests its multiple and complex determination related to factors from different levels that cannot be exclusively explained by health problems.

The aim of this study was to analyze the causal factors of pleasure and suffering in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) nursing staff and to compare the occurrence of these factors at the beginning and end of the career. This was a cross-sectional descriptive study conducted with 26 nurses and 96 nursing technicians. The previously validated Pleasure and Suffering Scale was used. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics with the SPSS 12.0 software and the Kruskal Wallis test was used to assess the presence of these factors at the beginning and end of the career. The results indicated that, for both the nurses and the nursing technicians, the factors that contribute to feelings of pleasure, professional achievement and freedom of expression, and the factors that cause suffering, professional exhaustion and lack of recognition, were encountered at critical levels. Placer y sufrimiento en trabajadores de enfermería de una Unidad de Terapia IntensivaEl objetivo del estudio fue analizar los factores causadores de placer y sufrimiento en trabajadores de enfermería que actúan en una Unidad de Terapia Intensiva (UTI) y comparar la ocurrencia de esos factores en el inicio y al final de la carrera. Se trata de un estudio descriptivo transversal, realizado con 26 enfermeros y 96 técnicos de enfermería. Se utilizó la Escala de Placer y Sufrimiento, validada previamente. Los datos fueron analizados por medio de la estadística descriptiva, con software SPSS12.0, y, para evaluar la presencia de esos factores en el inicio y al final de la carrera, se utilizó la prueba de Kruskal Wallis. RESUMO. As LER/DORT estão relacionadas às mudanças em curso na organização do trabalho e às inovações tecnológicas resultantes da reestruturação produtiva. O trabalho de enfermagem, por suas características, acaba por provocar lesões físicas relacionadas ao trabalho, muitas vezes irreversíveis. Este estudo analisa a produção científica sobre a LER/DORT em trabalhadores de enfermagem. A amostra foi composta por 14 artigos que abordavam as LER/DORT na saúde do profissional de enfermagem indexados nas bases de dados Medline, Scielo e Lilacs, no período de 1996 a 2006, publicados em periódicos nacionais e internacionais. Conclui-se que maior atenção deve ser direcionada às posturas adotadas pelos trabalhadores na execução das atividades laborais, além de mobiliários adequados às execuções das tarefas, bem como se faz necessário disponibilizar instrumentos e equipamentos ergonomicamente idealizados, visando a redução da incidência das doenças relacionadas ao trabalho.Palavras-chave: LER, DORT, profissionais de saúde, enfermeiros.ABSTRACT. Incidence of occupational disorders in nursing workers. Occupational disorders are connected to changes in work organization and to technological innovations caused by a restructuring of the production process. The Nursing profession, by nature, can lead to work-related physical lesions, some of which can be irreversible. This study analyzes scientific literature on the subject of occupational disorders in nursing professionals. The sample was composed of 14 articles that discuss the effects of these disorders on the health of nursing professionals. It aims to detect the main problems associated with nursing according to the Medline, Scielo and Lilacs databases, from 1996 to 2006, published in national and international annals. Evidence has demonstrated that attention must be paid to the nurses' posture while they work, as well as to provide adequate furniture; additionally, it is necessary to ergonomically appropriate instruments and equipment, in order to reduce the incidence of occupational disorders.

Abstract: This text articulates empirical evidence resulting from scientific work with the intention of providing a reflection about the application of ergonomics as a methodological instrument to support improvement of the labor conditions of nursing personnel in hospitals.
