“…Within this context, our analysis was focused on the functionalities related to the scheduling of medical appointments, which was identified by users as one of the most important functions of the system. By comparing the results of our study with the aforementioned work by Galvão and Sawada (1996), we find that, of the three main benefits pointed out by those authors -namely, increased agility in obtaining information, streamlining of services and cost reduction -only the second (i.e. streamlining of services) seems to have been achieved as a result of the detected increased convenience for patients and improved general organization of the work in health care units.…”

This article evaluates social implications of the "SIGA" Health Care Information System (HIS) in a public health care organization in the city of São Paulo. The evaluation was performed by means of an in-depth case study with patients and staff of a public health care organization, using qualitative and quantitative data. On the one hand, the system had consequences perceived as positive such as improved convenience and democratization of specialized treatment for patients and improvements in work organization. On the other hand, negative outcomes were reported, like difficulties faced by employees due to little familiarity with IT and an increase in the time needed to schedule appointments. Results show the ambiguity of the implications of HIS in developing countries, emphasizing the need for a more nuanced view of the evaluation of failures and successes and the importance of social contextual factors.keywords Health care information systems; social implications; Brazil; public health care; information technology. RESUMO Este artigo analisa implicações sociais do Sistema de Informação SIGA em uma instituição pública de saúde na cidade de São Paulo. A avaliação foi realizada por meio de estudo de caso em profundidade com pacientes e funcionários da instituição pública, utilizando metodologia qualitativa e quantitativa. Por um lado, o sistema teve conseqüências percebidas como positivas como a melhoria na comodidade e democratização do atendimento especializado aos pacientes e melhorias na organização do trabalho. Por outro lado, resultados negativos foram relatados, como dificuldades enfrentadas pelos trabalhadores devido a pouca familiaridade com TI e um aumento no tempo necessário para agendar consultas. Os resultados mostram a ambigüidade das implicações dos sistemas de informação de saúde em países em desenvolvimento, enfatizando a necessidade de uma visão mais apurada em relação à avaliação de fracassos e sucessos e a importância de fatores sociais contextuais. Over the years, the technology concept was modified, especially from the development of scientific knowledge and the philosophical and artistic conceptions. Thus, it was used the evolutionary approach in order to analyze the concept of technology found in nursing journals; the analysis included 39 articles selected by searching the BDENF database, performed in November 2008, and covering the period 1996 to 2007. The results showed the design of technology as a product and as a process. Regarding technology as a product, it was associated with knowledge, training and thinking on the administration of these new technologies. As a process it encompassed groups and their organization, as well as training for capacitation. This technology, in turn, was organized in psychosocial rehabilitation, protection, and in group strategy. It was concluded that understanding the concept of technology helps nurses to utilize it and to support their actions in the theoretical and methodological ambiance, enabling the application of the concept to its fullest. Keywords: Concept formation; Research; Technology RESUMOAo longo dos anos, o conceito de tecnologia sofreu modificações, decorrentes, sobretudo, da evolução do conhecimento científico e das concepções filosóficas e artísticas. Assim, utilizou-se o método evolucionário com vistas a analisar o conceito de tecnologia nas publicações de enfermagem, que incluem 39 artigos selecionados, a partir de busca na base de dados BDENF, em novembro de 2008 abrangendo o período de 1996 a 2007. Os resultados evidenciaram a concepção de tecnologia, como produto e processo. Enquanto a tecnologia como produto esteve associada ao conhecimento, capacitação e reflexões a respeito da administração dessas novas tecnologias e, como processo compreendeu os grupos e suas conformações, além dos processos de ensino e capacitação. Esta tecnologia, por sua vez, foi organizada em reabilitação psicossocial, acolhimento e estratégia de grupo. Concluiu-se que a compreensão do conceito de tecnologia auxilia em sua utilização pelos profissionais de enfermagem e respalda suas ações no âmbito teórico-metodológico, possibilitando a aplicação do conceito em sua plenitude. The principal themes are described approached in goods of indexed newspapers, in two bases of available data in Internet, in the period from 1978 to 1998. Consultations were accomplished BIREME, through Internet, being used the descriptors in several orders. A total of 54 goods was obtained that were codified and tabulated. It was ended that, in the studied sample, the thematic of the researches developed on computer science in health had a profile change that passed of theoretical studies for applications in the work atmosphere.
