The privacy and confidentiality of users are often disrespected within the hospital setting. The present study, consisting of an exploratory and qualitative survey, was performed in a general hospital located in Pau dos Ferros, in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil and aimed to analyze the perception of users regarding aspects related to their privacy and confidentiality during hospitalization The semi-structured interview technique with content analysis was used for data collection. After data analysis, two categories were created: the privacy of hospitalized users and the confidentiality of their data. The results showed that interviewees had an ambiguous understanding of privacy and confidentiality and a limited comprehension of these issues. As they were not aware they had such rights, they did not associate invasive situations experienced during hospitalization with disrespect. In addition, the speeches of the participants showed passivity and acceptance towards the care received. It is therefore hoped that the results of this study can contribute to the expansion of discussions about the ethical aspects studied and possible improvements in health care. Keywords: Patient care. Resumo Privacidade e confidencialidade de usuários em um hospital geralNo ambiente hospitalar, privacidade e confidencialidade dos usuários são frequentemente desrespeitadas. Esta pesquisa, exploratória e qualitativa, realizada em hospital geral localizado em Pau dos Ferros, Rio Grande do Norte, Brasil, objetivou analisar a percepção de usuários sobre aspectos relacionados a sua privacidade e confidencialidade durante a internação. Utilizou-se para a coleta de dados a técnica da entrevista semiestruturada com análise de conteúdo. Após análise dos dados, foram criadas duas categorias: privacidade dos usuários hospitalizados e confidencialidade dos dados dos usuários hospitalizados. Os resultados demonstraram que os entrevistados têm entendimento ambíguo e limitado sobre privacidade e confidencialidade. Por não saberem que têm esses direitos não associaram situações invasivas durante a internação ao desrespeito. Além disso, os participantes manifestaram em suas falas passividade e aceitação diante dos cuidados recebidos. Logo, espera-se que os resultados deste estudo possam estimular discussões sobre os aspectos éticos estudados e aperfeiçoar os cuidados em saúde. Palavras-chave: Assistência ao paciente. Preservação do direito à privacidade:perceção do doente internado Revisão IntegrativaPreservación del derecho a la privacidade: RESUMENIntroducción: La privacidad como derecho humano fundamental debe preservarse en todas las dimensiones. En la situación de internamiento hospitalario las dos dimensiones de la privacidad más afectadas son la privacidad física y de información. La preservación de la privacidad de los pacientes es esencial para establecer una relación entre éstos y el equipo de salud y es actualmente un indicador importante de la calidad del cuidado.Objetivos: Conocer las perspectivas de los pacientes internados acerca de su derecho a la privacidad.Métodos: Se realizó una revisión integrativa basada en la investigación de estudios en las bases de datos B-on, SciELO y EBSCO en los últimos 12 años (2005)(2006)(2007)(2008)(2009)(2010)(2011)(2012)(2013)(2014)(2015)(2016).Resultados: Se seleccionaron 9 artículos, de los cuales 4 son de abordaje cuantitativo y 5 cualitativo. Los artículos sugieren que las dimensiones de la privacidad que más veces sufren infracciones son la dimensión física e informacional. Los aspectos del espacio físico se denominan factores que influyen negativamente en la preservación de la privacidad.Conclusión: La percepción de los enfermos sobre su privacidad predice su satisfacción en el cuidado. La falta de privacidad condiciona en el paciente sentimientos de estrés y afecta la relación entre éstos y los profesionales de la salud.Palabras clave: Privacidad; confidencialidad; enfermo; atención de enfermería. ABSTRACTIntroduction: Privacy as a fundamental human right must be preserved in all dimensions.In hospitalization the two dimensions of privacy most affected are physical and information privacy. Preserving patient privacy is essential in establishing a relationship between the patient and the health care team and is currently an important indicator of the quality of care.Objectives: Knowing perspectives of hospitalized patients about their right to privacy.Methods: An integrative review was based on research studies in databases B-on, SciELO and EBSCO in the last 12 years (2005)(2006)(2007)(2008)(2009)(2010)(2011)(2012)(2013)(2014)(2015)(2016).Results: We selected 9 articles, 4 of which are quantitative approach and 5 qualitative. The articles suggest that the dimensions of privacy that are most often violated are the physical and informational dimension. Aspects of physical space are referred to as factors that negatively influence the preservation of privacy. Conclusion:Patients' perception of their privacy predicts their satisfaction about care. The lack of privacy conditions in the patient feelings of stress and affects the relationship between these and the health professionals.
