Quality based payment program and milk quality in dairy cooperatives of Southern Brazil: an econometric analysis

Abstract: Programs designed to enhance milk quality have been used to motivate dairy farmers to improve the quality of the raw milk they produce. The objective of this study was to evaluate the association between a milk quality payment program and four indicative variables of milk quality, by testing bulk tank somatic cell count (SCC), bulk tank total bacterial count (TBC), fat (FAT) and protein (PROT) percentages over three years in four dairy cooperatives in Southern Brazil. We used a multiple regression econometric … Show more

“…Increased competitiveness in the milk supply chain requires the production of high quality raw milk, which depends on milk processing, yield, and acceptability of dairy products (BOTARO et al, 2013). In order to characterize milk quality, the most commonly used criteria are hygiene milk composition, and sensory characteristics of consumer interest (BRANDT et al, 2010).…”

“…A number of Brazilian dairies currently have in place compensation systems to producers with awards and penalties assigned to the liter price (L) of raw milk based on quality criteria, such as Total Bacterial Count (TBC), Somatic Cell Count (SCC), protein and fat contents, as an incentive for milk quality improvement (Roma et al, 2009). However, these programs have not increased the protein and fat content of raw milk supplied to dairies (Botaro et al, 2013).…”
