Genetic similarity among strawberry cultivars assessed by RAPD and ISSR markers

Abstract: Most strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duchesne) cultivars used in Brazil are developed in other countries, it became clear the need to start the strawberry breeding program in the country. To start a breeding program is necessary the genetic characterization of the germplasm available. Molecular markers are important tools that can be used for this purpose. The objectives of the present study were to assess the genetic similarity among 11 strawberry cultivars using RAPD and ISSR molecular markers and to indicat… Show more

“…Quantitative agronomic traits are phenotypic markers widely used in genetic divergence studies (Morales et al, 2011a) with the advantage of being directly linked to the coding regions of the genome aside from the low acquisition cost (Gonçalves et al, 2008). However, environmental influences and the need to evaluate some variables in the adult plant stage are the main disadvantages of this marker group, hampering their use.…”

“…The combined use of RAPD and ISSR markers was successfully used in a considerable number of horticultural species such as potato (Moulin et al 2012), strawberry (Morales et al 2011) and mulberry (Awasthi et al 2004;Kalpana et al 2012).…”

“…This is due to the determination of the level of genetic divergence and the molecular pattern of each cultivar. With these data, the breeder can plan crosses using molecular and field data, which can result in the development of superior cultivars more quickly and economically (Langridge and Chalmers, 2004;Morales et al, 2011). Molecular markers are increasingly used in breeding programs of many horticultural crops.…”
