Barium extraction potential by mustard, sunflower and castor bean

Abstract: Barium salts are used extensively for industrial purposes, generating residues that, if not appropriately disposed, can increase soil Ba content. The aim of the present work was to evaluate Ba extraction potential of mustard (Brassica juncea Czern.), sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.), and castor bean (Ricinus communis L.), grown in a soil artificially contaminated with increasing Ba additions. A greenhouse experiment was carried out by adding BaSO 4 to a Rhodic Hapludox sample, at the 0, 150 and 300 mg kg -1 ra… Show more

“…A mamoneira (Ricinus communis L.) ou carrapateira, é uma oleaginosa de elevado valor socioeconômico para o semiárido; trata-se de uma planta rústica, que consegue alcançar elevada produção de biomassa em lugares de baixa precipitação pluvial (Coscione & Berton, 2009).…”

“…Among the few studies available in Brazil, many have been restricted to academics (Carneiro et al, 2001;Coscione and Berton, 2009;Gabos et al, 2009;Marques et al, 2000;Pereira et al, 2007;Romeiro et al, 2006;Santos et al, 2007;Zeittouni et al, 2007). In spite of that, promising species well known in Brazilian agriculture due to its robustness, good climate adaptation, deep root system and good biomass production have not been evaluated.…”

“…This may be due to the fact that the Ba concentration in solutions was not high enough to affect Ba uptake in reeds. According to Coscione and Berton [34], the difference of Ba contents in sunfl ower grown in artifi cial Ba-contaminated soils was not signifi cant, until up to the dose of 300 mg/ kg Ba. Different from the roots, the Ba level in shoots of reeds was not affected by the concentration of Ba in solutions at all (Fig.…”
