Relationship between acidity and chemical properties of brazilian soils

Abstract: In soils of tropical climate regions the high acidity and the presence of exchangeable aluminum (Al3+), associated to low fertility, are the main restrainting factors for agricultural production. A laboratory experiment was conducted using 26 soils of different Brazilian regions, to investigate soil acidity components, giving emphasis to Al and their relations with chemical properties. The pH correlated positively with P, Ca, Mg, K, BS, CEC and V% values, and negatively with Al saturation. The Al3+ was the pre… Show more

“…Moreover, it is possible to infer about a strong relationship between the contents of Ca 2+ and the values of SB in the studied soils. These relationships are according to the results of Abreu Jr. et al [16] and Mg 2+ are linked with the use of limestone to correct the soil acidity and supply these cations. The interaction between the evaluated factors was not significant for Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , and SB.…”

“…The XRF (Jones et al, 2000;Alves et al, 2007;Alves et al, 2008) as well as the ICP-AES (Fadigas et al, 2002;Abreu Jr., et al, 2003;Giarola et al, 2009) are useful techniques in the determination of the elementary soil chemical composition. The former, however, requires larger samples in relation to the latter.…”

“…The phytotoxicity of the aluminum in these areas has already been demonstrated by different researchers (Abreu et al 2003, Wenzl et al 2003, Mendonça et al 2006, mainly in Latossolos. Lime and fertilizer inputs might minimize and even eliminate such problems, but technical recommendations are often not implemented by the farmers of the region.…”
