Salt stress is one of several major abiotic stresses that affect plant growth and development, and there are many evidences that silicon can ameliorate the injuries caused by high salinity. This study presents the results of an assay concerning: (1) the effect of in vitro NaCl-induced salt stress in cape gooseberry plants and (2) the possible mitigating effect of silicon in saline conditions. For that, nodal segments were inoculated in Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium under salinity (0.5 and 1.0% NaCl) with different silicic acid concentrations (0, 0.5 and 1.0g L-1). Phytotechnical characteristics, photosynthetic pigments content, and leaf anatomy were evaluated after 30 days. Shoot length, root length, number of leaves and buds, fresh and dry weight, pigment content, stomatal density and leaf blade thickness were drastically reduced by increased salt level. The supply of silicon (1.0g L-1) has successfully mitigated the effect of salinity at 0.5% NaCl for chlorophyll, carotenoids, stomatal density and leaf blade thickness. When salt stress was about 1.0%, Si was not effective anymore. In conclusion, we affirmed that, in in vitro conditions, salt stress is harmful for cape gooseberry plants and the addition of silicon showed effective in mitigating the saline effects of some features.

Response of physalis (Physalis peruviana L.) to liming in acidic soils

Physalis is an herbaceous plant that produces edible fruits with a bittersweet flavor. This species has a high cropping potential attracting attention of farmers, traders and consumers. The effects of soil acidity indices on nutrient uptake, optimal growth, yield and fruit quality of physalis in acidic soils were evaluated. The study was conducted in a greenhouse with four lime requirements in completely randomized design and five replications. Dolomitic limestone was applied to the soils at rates of 0, 0.6, 1.4, and 2.3 t ha-1 (Typic Quartzipsamment) and 0, 0.8, 1.8, and 2.8 t ha-1 (Rhodic Hapludox). Plant height, stem diameter, shoot and root dry weight, longitudinal and transverse diameters of the fruits, macro and micronutrient concentrations in leaves, and soil chemical properties were evaluated. Liming is an essential practice for the cultivation of Physalis peruviana L. in the acidic soils, where it is aimed to achieve higher yields and quality fruit. The results highlighted the high demands of physalis for Ca, Mg, and base saturation, and low tolerance to aluminum in the soil. Maximum growth, yield and fruit quality was obtained with the application of 1.8 t lime ha-1 for both soils. The determined standards for pH in water, tolerated aluminum saturation, desired base saturation and calcium and magnesium requirements were 6.4, 5.0 %, 67 % and 25,8 mmolc dm-3, respectively.

The genus Physalis belongs to the family Solanaceae, Physalis peruviana L. being the most cultivated species. As a newly explored crop in Brazil, little is known about its germination ecology and emergence under local conditions. The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of temperature, photoperiod, planting depth and seed dormancy on the establishment of Physalis seedlings. Tests were conducted on two Physalis biotypes from Sertão (Rio Grande do Sul state-RS) and Capelinha (Minas Gerais state). Seeds incubated at 27 °C and 32 °C exhibited high germination percentages of 98% and 96%, respectively. Germination declined when seeds were incubated at 12, 17, 22 and 37 °C. Photoperiods longer than 8 h are sufficient for seed germination, while the absence of light significantly reduces the germination percentage. Seeds should be planted at a depth of 1-2 cm to ensure better seedling emergence. After 18 months of field work, 81% of seeds had germinated and/or been predated prior to assessment, indicating low seed dormancy. As such, ideal conditions for Physalis seedling establishment are planting depth between 1 cm and 2 cm, temperatures ranging from 27 °C to 32 °C and a photoperiod longer than 8 h, with a postharvest seed shelf life of 12 months.
