“…However, in a T. evansi outbreak in horses reported by Zanette et al (2008), the animals did not show anemia, even with clinical signs of swinging gait and incoordination of the hind limbs, which agrees with the study in question, since the rabbits showed such clinical signs and absence of anemia. Infection with T. evansi promoted increase in BChE activity only on the seventh day PI.…”

“…In Brazil, T. evansi has been diagnosed in horses in the states of Pará (JANSEN, 1941), Mato Grosso do Sul (HERRERA et al, 2004), and Rio Grande do Sul (ZANETTE et al, 2008), where this pathogen is of great importance as the causative agent of "mal das cadeiras" or "surra"; this disease leads to severe economic losses for Brazilian horse breeding due to the treatment costs and the high rates of lethality and mortality (SEIDL et al, 1998). The first disease cases were reported in Marajó Island, Pará State, where the disease was reported to cause high lethality in horses (LACERDA, 1885apud JANSEN, 1941 and was later considered enzootic in this region (JANSEN, 1941).…”

“…Usually, ruminants are resistant to T. evansi infection (Smith, 2002); however, in other animals, such as horses and dogs, this parasite may cause severe anemia (Colpo et al, 2005;Rodrigues et al, 2005), along with other clinical signs such as limb edema, lethargy, loss of appetite and weight, intermittent fever, fetus tearing and abortion (Colpo et al, 2005;Rodrigues et al, 2005;Silva et al, 2002;Zanette et al, 2008). Even though abortion did not occur throughout our study, both infected animals delivered stillborns, and the other lambs died a few hours after birth.…”
