“…Animals having BMS1074*151 allele, previously detected as having lower average daily weight gain (Almeida et al 2007), presented also higher LEP gene expression, which is accordance with the leptin role in controlling feed intake: animals with higher LEP gene expression will probably have less daily weight gain when compared with other individuals in similar forage offer and nutritional status, but having a lower LEP gene expression. This is true not only for animals in energy homeostasis, but also for those in negative energy balance.…”

“…More specifically in beef cattle, IDVGA51 STR (short-tandem repeat polymorphism) and LEPSau3AI SNP have been shown to affect reproductive performance, and alleles ID-VGA51*181 (allele 181 at locus IDVGA51) and LEP Sau3AI*2 have been proved to increase calving interval by approximately 79 and 81 days, respectively (Almeida et al 2003). Additionally, BMS1074 and BM1500 STRs seem to influence weight gain in postpartum cows; the effect is due to the alleles BMS1074*151 and BM1500*135 that reduce and increase, respectively, the daily weight gain (Almeida et al 2007). According to these authors, the effects could result from the influence of these markers on LEP gene expression control or from linkage disequilibrium of these alleles with some LEP gene mutation, which alter leptin function or expression.…”
