Show more

“…The more frequent patterns of resistance were to beta lactam, lincomicin, tetraciclyne, quinolone, macrolide, aminoglycoside and polymixin groups (data not shown). Plasmids and other genetic elements, like integrons, may be encountered in UPEC and are associated to coding virulence factors and MDR (4,5,18). In our study plasmids were found in 39.02% (32/82) of E. coli isolates.…”

“…For the EPEC strain, there were no cells in the positive control -mannose ( Figure 2C). One possible explanation for this in vitro study could be based on the fact that the EPEC strains had, among other adherence factors, fimbriae type 1 or mannose-sensitive (Brito et al, 2004). Therefore, when mannose was present in the medium, the adherence of bacteria to the slides was obstructed.…”

“…The bacterial fimbriae recognize some soluble carbohydrates that lead to adhesion blockage, in vitro, of some bacteria (Sharon and Ofek, 2000;Sharon, 2006). The presence of this type of fimbriae is common in the samples of E. coli from urinary and faecal origin (Girón, 1993;Brito et al, 2004). The effects of some compounds on the adherence of microorganisms are recent and there are few studies in the literature addressing this application (Ofek and Sharon, 2000).…”

“…The impact of swine production on the global economy, especially in Brazil, which has the 3 rd largest herd of swine, and the State of Paraná as the 4th largest Brazilian producer of swine, has made it essential to have rigorous control of diseases affecting the economic yield and productivity of the heard, such as urinary infection (Dalla- Costa and Sobestiansky, 1999). Urinary tract infections cause great economic losses due to puerperal diseases, post-weaning infertility, expenses with medications, reduction of weight gain in piglets and mortality rates (Brito et al, 2004). Urinary problems are responsible for 50% of sudden death of sows in production and are the main cause of mortality among adult animals (Perestrelo and Perestrelo, 1988).…”
