The present review examines the main attributes and agronomic characteristics of arrowleaf clover (Trifolium vesiculosum Savi) and its incorporation into production systems in dryland areas of the Andean foothills of the humid Mediterranean climate zone of Chile. It is a new species of annual legume in Chile for light and medium textured soils. The root system can reach a depth of 1.5 m and its seeds have a high percentage of hardseedness (99.8%). It is an upright plant, with purplish-white flowers. The mature plant has large arrow-shaped leaves up to 50 mm long, often marked with a large white "V". Dry matter and seed production in the Andean foothills is high (3.9-8.8 t DM ha -1 and 700-900 kg ha -1 , respectively), surpassing the productivity of sub clover (Trifolium subterraneum L.) cv. Mount Barker and crimson clover (Trifolium incarnatum L.). However, DM production in the second year was lower, possibly because the high percentage of hardseedness inhibited plant emergence. The phenological records and productive performance suggest that arrowleaf clover could contribute to improving pastoral production in dryland areas with annual rainfall levels of more than 800 mm, such as the Andean foothills in the central-southern region of Chile.

RESUMO -Objetivou-se avaliar, por meio do desempenho animal, silagens de três híbridos de milho (Zea mays, L.): Agroceres AG-5011, Braskalb XL-344 e Cargill C-806. Foram utilizados 27 machos, não-castrados, mestiços Nelore x Charolês, com idade média de 10 meses e peso médio inicial de 252 kg, confinados durante 84 dias, subdivididos em quatro períodos de 21 dias. As silagens dos híbridos testados corresponderam a 70% da matéria seca ofertada. Não houve interação do híbrido de milho testado com o período de avaliação em confinamento, para os parâmetros estudados. A dieta que incluiu a silagem do híbrido AG-5011 resultou em maior consumo voluntário médio diário de matéria seca, expresso por 100 kg de peso vivo e tamanho metabólico, e maior consumo médio diário de fibra em detergente ácido, expresso nas diferentes formas, em relação aos híbridos XL-344 e C-806, que, por sua vez, foram semelhantes entre si. As dietas que incluíram silagens dos híbridos AG-5011, XL-344 e C-806 apresentaram semelhanças quanto ao consumo voluntário de matéria seca, expresso em kg/animal/dia (6,73; 6,05; e 6,19), consumo médio diário de FDN, em kg/dia (3,054; 2,837; e 2,836), e energia digestível, expressa nas diferentes formas, ganho de peso médio diário, em kg/dia (1,283; 1,219; e 1,249), ganho em estado corporal, conversão alimentar (5,26; 4,98; e 4,97) e eficiência energética (14,02; 13,68; e 13,21). Terminação em Confinamento de Vacas e Novilhas sob Dietas com ou sem Monensina Sódica

RESUMO -Foram estudados os parâmetros relativos ao desempenho, em confinamento, de duas categorias de fêmeas de descarte, vacas e novilhas da raça Charolês, alimentadas com duas dietas, com inclusão ou não de monensina sódica. A quantidade diária de monensina fornecida foi de 150 mg/animal. A relação volumoso:concentrado da dieta alimentar foi de 65:35. O volumoso utilizado foi a silagem de sorgo. A inclusão de monensina à dieta alimentar causou redução significativa no consumo voluntário diário de matéria seca (CMSD), sendo mais acentuada nas vacas (9,1%) que nas novilhas (1,7%). A interação entre categoria animal x dieta foi significativa para ganho de peso médio diário (GMD). Nas novilhas, a monensina provocou leve aumento no GMD (1,92 versus 1,86 kg), já nas vacas causou redução no GMD (1,56 versus 1,74 kg). A conversão alimentar (CMSD/GMD) não foi influenciada pela monensina. As vacas apresentaram maior CMSD que as novilhas. No entanto, quando o CMSD foi expresso por 100 kg de peso vivo e por unidade de tamanho metabólico, a diferença deixou de existir. As novilhas foram mais eficientes que as vacas na transformação da matéria seca consumida em ganho de peso (6,40 versus 8,28 kg de MS/kg de ganho de peso). O custo dos alimentos por kg de peso vivo foi R$ 0,66 e 0,69 nas novilhas e 0,84 e 0,74 nas vacas para as dietas que incluíram ou não monensina, respectivamente.Palavras-chave: consumo de matéria seca, eficiência alimentar, ionóforo, fêmeas de descarte Feedlot Performance of Cull Cows and Heifers Fed Diets with or without MonensinABSTRACT -Feedlot parameters of two categories of cull females, cows and heifers, fed two diets, with and without monensin, were studied. The daily amount of monensin supplied was 150 mg/animal. The roughage:concentrate ratio was 65:35. The roughage used was sorghum silage. The inclusion of monensin to the diet caused a significant reduction of the daily voluntary dry matter intake (DDMI), which was more pronounced for the cows (9.1%) than for the heifers (1.7%). The animal category x diet interaction affected significantly the average daily weight gain (ADG). Monensin caused a slight increase in heifers ADG (1.92 vs 1.86 kg) while for the cows it reduced the ADG (1.56 vs 1.74 kg). Feed:gain ratio (DDMI/ADG) was not affected by monensin. Cows showed a higher DDMI than the heifers. However when DDMI was expressed per 100 kg of live weight and per unit of metabolic weight the difference disappeared. Heifers were more efficient than cows in converting feed into weight gain (6.40 vs 8.28 kg of DM/kg of live weight gain).
