Biologia do jundiá Rhamdia quelen (Teleostei, Pimelodidae)

“…Silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) is endemic in South American rivers and lakes and has been widely used for aquaculture alone or comingled with other fish species (B (Gomes et al 2000, Barcellos et al 2004b). However, bacteria and parasitic infections (Barcellos et al 2008, Martins et al 2011) remains a major challenge to improve productivity and triggers the need to improve fish health by means of vaccination and PAMPs-enriched diets.…”

“…Another species adapted to the adverse conditions of urban streams is R. quelen. It is omnivorous, prefers low water flow, sand or clay bottom substrate, and is resistant to high temperatures (compared with many other Brazilian species) (Gomes et al, 2000). However, previous studies associating R. quelen with disturbed streams considered its response to physicochemical water oscillation instead of disturbed instream habitats (Casatti et al, 2006;Dias & TejerinaGarro, 2010).…”

“…The feeding habits considered were: carnivore, omnivore and herbivore. Classification into these categories was based on specific references of feeding habits for each species: traira (PEREIRA et al, 1982), silver catfish (GOMES et al, 2000), hassar (WINEMILLER, 1987) and grass carp (KIRKAGAÇ, 2003). Species were considered carnivores, omnivores or herbivores only when references stated that at least 80% of their meal was based on the specified food.…”
