Show more

“…The soybean stalk weevil, Sternechus subsignatus Boheman, 1836 (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Sternechini), is one of the most important pests on soybean crops in Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, and in the northwestern of Argentina (Hoffmann-Campo et al, 1991;Socías et al, 2011). This weevil is a Neotropical univoltine species restricted to certain herbaceous leguminous plants among which soybean, Glycine max Merrill (Fabacae), is the preferred host (Silva, 1997). The life cycle comprises the egg, larval (five instars), pupa and adult stages.…”

This weevil remains active from early soybean development up to its harvest, and has a severe impact on the crop in Northwestern Argentina (NOA) (Casmuz et al 2009a) because both larvae and adults damage its plants (Silva et al 1998).…”

“…In the study area, rains are concentrated in summer, and the life cycle of soybean stalk weevil comprises an active phase, when the pest attacks soybean crops, and a dormant phase, during which it remains buried in the soil (Hoffmann-Campo et al 1991, Silva 1997, Soc ıas et al 2011). After first emergence, the rest of weevils emerge gradually over 60-to 90-d period, and the long-lived females oviposit eggs individually (maximum fecundity reaches 292 eggs per female).…”
