Show more

“…Despite its potential to rationalise productive capacity of herds (Santos et al, 2004b), foetal deaths were frequently attributed to ultrasound examination (Horder et al, 1986). Several studies focused on gestational loss, but Kaulfuss et al (1997) were the first to report on the use ultrasound for the diagnosis of embryo mortality in ewes.…”

“…On the day before the start of the experiments, females received numbered plastic rings, were weighed and evaluated for body condition scoring (BSC) as previously described. 10 The reproductive status of the females was evaluated by ultrasound, 11 and vaginoscopy exam adapted from cattle. 12 Three bucks (24 to 48 months of age) were kept in individual stalls before the experiment onset and fed with grass as described below and supplemented with 200 g of concentrated feed (Durancho®, Nutrição Animal, Pesqueira, Brazil) and 200 g of corn grain (Zea mays, L)/animal/day.…”

“…Pregnancy diagnosis was determined by ultrasound examination on the 60th day after the last mating of the BS, as previously described. 11 The results were evaluated by descriptive statistical analysis, Student's T testing for comparing averages, chi-square for ratio comparison, and Fisher's test for comparing variances. Level of significance was 5%.…”

“…The reproductive status of all ewes was assessed by ultrasonographic and vaginoscopic examinations and progesterone dosage 60 and 80 days after partuition. 11,12 Females were considered cycling when progesterone (P4) levels reached 1 ng mL -1 . 13 Blood samples for progesterone dosage were collected in vacutainer tubes by punctioning the jugular vein, transferred to 0.75 mL polypropylene tubes, and stored at −20°C until further use.…”
