Reestablishment of occlusion through overlay removable partial dentures: a case report

Abstract: Loss of posterior teeth may cause an imbalance in the stomatognathic system. Overlay removable partial dentures (ORPD) are a reversible and relatively inexpensive treatment for patients with severely worn teeth. This paper presents a treatment with ORPD in a 55-year-old male patient who had severe attrition in the maxillary and mandibular teeth, temporomandibular joint pain and reduced vertical dimension of occlusion (VDO). The treatment consisted in the reestablishment of the VDO using Lucia's jig, fabricatin… Show more

“…A removable partial denture (RPD) is an appropriate treatment to restore missing teeth for partially edentulous patients whose remaining teeth have been weakened by severe tooth wear or periodontitis [1-3]. Recently, the combination of RPDs and implants has become a common method for restoring missing teeth with heavy resorption of partially edentulous ridges [4-6], and for recovery after failure of implant-supported fixed prostheses [7], due to the adaptability of RPDs with respect to changes in oral conditions [8, 9].…”

“…11 The occlusal contacts allowed masticatory forces to be distributed in a simultaneous and homogenous way along the long axis of abutment. There was also a coordinated mandibular movement.…”

“…7 Because of its lower cost, this type of treatment can be indicated for solving several tooth situations that require only one prosthesis. 8 The following are three ways to perform an ORPD: (I) with occlusal metallic covering and complete resin or ceramic veneer; 8,10,11 (II) with an occlusal resin covering and partial resin veneer; 12 (III) with an occlusal resin covering and a complete buccal veneer, as described in this report. Types I and III are very similar with respect to the final esthetics once there is a color and contour pattern: they lack a visible line between the worn tooth and the prosthetic tooth.…”
