Mandibular periosteal (juxtacortical) chondrosarcoma

Abstract: Periosteal (juxtacortical) chondrosarcoma (PC) is a well-differentiated malignant cartilage-forming tumor arising from the external bone surface, especially in long bones. The therapy of choice is en-bloc resection and, in general, its prognosis is good. This paper reports a rare case of PC affecting the mandible of a 41-year-old man. The lesion presented as a slow-growing-painless swelling that lasted 2 months. Computed tomography scan showed a tumoral mass arising from the external bone surface, extending in… Show more

“…A PubMed search of the English‐language literature for ‘periosteal chondrosarcoma’ and ‘juxtacortical chondrosarcoma’ resulted in available full‐text articles with, in total, 109 cases from 1955 until 2013, including a few small series containing up to 24 cases and case reports . Using the archives of the NCBT, we collected a relatively large series of 38 periosteal chondrosarcomas, for which clinicoradiological features have been described elsewhere by others .…”

“…Similarly, histopathologic differentiation of JCS from CCS requires astute microscopic examination due to several common features [15]. In both instances, lobules of hyaline cartilage with irregular distribution of cells are present with tumor cells often exhibiting nuclear pleomorphisms.…”

“…In both instances, lobules of hyaline cartilage with irregular distribution of cells are present with tumor cells often exhibiting nuclear pleomorphisms. Calcification within the hyaline matrix and cortical invasion are also common findings, but no malignant osteoid or bone are present within the tumor [10,15]. Both CCS and JCS may reveal a fibrous peripheral capsule with projecting septa that delve into the tumor, partitioning the cartilage into variable-sized lobules.…”
