Floor of the nose mucosa lysis and labial abscess caused by a bee sting

Abstract: Hymenoptera order includes bees, which have a stinging apparatus at the tail capable of delivering venom to the affected tissues. Myocardial infarction, acute renal failure, Necrotizing fasciitis, fatal infection and hemifacial asymmetry, are some of the unusual reactions reported following hymenoptera stings. This paper reports a case of bee sting in the right floor of the nose that mimicked an odontogenic infection affecting the upper lip, canine space and nasal cavity such as in cases of infection secondary… Show more

“…[3132] When bee inoculation on the floor of nose, it is observed to cause floor of the nose lysis and lip abscess. [33] Here in our study, we had a case (Case 9) where the patient had throat pain and change in voice. Her vocal cords were normal but she had bilateral arytenoids congestion.…”

“…The most critical consequence of bee sting is anaphylactic shock. Bee venom is a complex toxin comprising various kinds of chemicals including melittin, apamin, adolapin, phospholipase A2, hyaluronidase, and histamine [3, 4], and generalized allergic reaction to these chemicals develops in 0.3~5% of people [2]. About 40 deaths per year by bee sting are reported in the United States [2].…”

“…The persisting antigens are thought to elicit development of an immune complex-medicated reaction, activating macrophage leading to a granulomatous inflammation [6]. As a result, a foreign body granuloma is formed at the site of the sting [4, 6]. Bee stings can also induce local infection because the stinging apparatus lodged in the tissue is contaminated with pathological bacteria [4].…”

“…[1] As many of these species live in colonies, numerous stings are common. Although most stings cause only minor problems like local reactions, others may cause serious problems like rhabdomyolysis, intravascular coagulation, cerebral hemorrhage, acute pulmonary edema, acute renal failure (ARF) and even death.…”
