Influence of local tetracycline on the microbiota of alveolar osteitis in rats

Abstract: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of local tetracycline on the occurrence of alveolar osteitis in rats, and on the microbiota associated to this infection. Forty Wistar rats were randomly assigned to 4 groups (n=10): I - the rats had the maxillary right incisor extracted and the alveolar wound did not receive any treatment; II - adrenaline and Ringer-PRAS were introduced into the alveolar wound; III - the alveolar wound was irrigated with sterile saline; and IV - the alveolar wound was i… Show more

“…Although compliance to post-extraction regimen using mouth rinses and prophylactic antibiotics are reported to significantly reduce the incidence of localised alveolar osteitis,1678910 dental surgeons often administered post-extraction regimen without considering patients’ preference for any combination of the regimen based on predictable outcome of the regimen.…”

“…However, the use of verbal and written post-surgical instruction was reported to enhance compliance 6. Some studies on the use of post-extraction mouthwash (warm saline, hydrogen peroxide, chlorhexidine) and antibiotics (tetracycline, amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, clindamycin, metronidazole) have reported reduction in the incidence of post-extraction alveolar osteitis 1678910…”

“…DOX, as other chemically modified tetracyclines (CMT), also possesses other pharmacologic properties that may positively contribute for periodontal healing process 3,18,19 . Previous in vitro studies have demonstrated that DOX inhibits proteases by blocking the conversion of latent proteases into active mature forms and the activation of MMP’s by chelating metal ions 23,24 .…”
