Efficacy of Carisolv™ as an adjunctive therapy to scaling and root planing on subgingival calculus removal

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of subgingival application of Carisolv™ gel as an adjunctive therapy to scaling and root planing (SRP) on calculus removal compared to conventional instrumentation. Forty-five teeth requiring extraction due to severe periodontal disease were randomized to the following treatments: 1) SRP alone; 2) placebo gel + SRP; 3) Carisolv™ gel + SRP. Either test or placebo gel was applied subgingivally for 1 min and then the root were instrumented until a smooth… Show more

“…Correlation between plaque formation and periodontal disease etiology was established with the understanding that plaque maturation is the trigger for the start of inflammatory processes (2), which leads to the destruction of periodontal tissues (9). Traditional scaling and root planning are essential procedures in periodontal therapy (10) and rely on mechanical removal of plaque, calculus, root-bound toxins and contaminated cementum (11). A viable dental plaque covers calculus deposits, which contributes substantially to the pathogenesis of bacteria-induced periodontal disease (12).…”

“…One study 46 reported a triple blind method, while nine studies reported a double-blind method: de Assis et al, 32 Bortolluzy et al, 16 Botelho et al, 17 Calvo et al, 19 Faraco et al, 36 Guimarães et al, 47 Kogawa et al, 48 Rivera et al 68 and Vieira et al 86 Fifteen studies reported single blinding of the healthcare providers or outcome assessors. 10,23,25,27,28,30,31,33,37,39,44,46,50,58 In another 14 studies, the authors reported blinding but did not describe the method, or blinding was impossible. The studies by Gispert Abreu et al 41 and Gispert Abreu et al 42 were examples of the impossibility of blinding, because there was no report of any alternative treatment or placebo for the controls.…”
