Emerging Countries and the Effects of the Trade War between US and China

The aim of the paper is to examine the effects of the US–China trade war on both countries and some emerging economies. Two scenarios are examined, one where only US protectionist measures are considered, and another in which Chinese retaliation is taken into account, using the GTAP (Global Trade Analysis Project) Computable General Equilibrium model. The results showed that, on one hand, the trade war would lead to a reduction in US trade deficit and an increase in domestic production of those sectors affected by higher import tariffs and Chinese producers and consumers would bear the lion’s share of the burden of the trade war. But, on the other hand, both countries and the world as a whole would lose in terms of welfare, due to the significant reduction in allocative efficiency, especially in the US, and the loss of terms of trade in the Chinese case. With the increase in protectionism between the two largest global economies, some important emerging countries, not directly involved in the trade war, would benefit by the shift in demand to sectors where they have comparative advantages.

Chilled boneless beef international trade: a cluster analysis

-The objective of this study was to measure and classify the international beef trade. For this, data related to the international chilled boneless beef (CBB) trade, the major and most important market, were analyzed. Producing countries were classified into groups according to their trade relations, and the main factors that influenced one country to prefer to import CBB from a specific exporting country were analyzed. The results revealed four markets related to client demands with regard to the sanitation and traceability of beef products. Furthermore, extrinsic characteristics of the product are discussed, such as a productive system that aims to minimize environmental impacts and to value animal welfare and respect for social demands. The markets that pay highest prices require sanitary quality of suppliers, demanding traceable and process-certified products. Brazil does not access these markets because it does not meet these requirements. To change this scenario it is necessary to eradicate FMD across the Brazilian territory, acquiring a status of a zone with minimal BSE risk, aligning the intrinsic value of the CBB with expectations of consumers and implementing a traceability program that is both feasible and acceptable for clients.

Resumo O objetivo do estudo é analisar as oportunidades de comércio a partir da simulação de uma possível integração comercial do Brasil com a China, com os EUA e com a UE, buscando identificar os setores mais beneficiados pelo eventual acordo, classificados conforme seu grau de intensidade tecnológica, com ênfase no agronegócio brasileiro. Empregou-se a classificação de produtos por grau de intensidade tecnológica segundo os critérios da Organização para Cooperação e Desenvolvimento Econômico (OCDE) e foi utilizado o modelo de equilíbrio geral computável, mediante uso da base de dados Global Trade Analysis Project (GTAP), versão 9, para simular os impactos sobre o comércio internacional e os efeitos sobre o bem-estar de uma possível integração comercial do Brasil com os parceiros selecionados. Por fim, os resultados obtidos mostram que os ganhos de bem-estar para o Brasil, em todos os acordos, estão principalmente vinculados à melhor alocação dos seus recursos produtivos, que estariam concentrados basicamente nos setores primários e de baixa intensidade tecnológica, que agregaria o agronegócio.
