Introduction Clinical measurements of strength in stroke subjects are usually performed and portable dynamometers are one of the most employed instruments. Objective To verify the standardization procedures of the methods used to assess the strength of the trunk and upper limb muscles with portable dynamometers in stroke subjects, as well as to assess the psychometric properties which were already investigated. Materials and methods An extensive search was performed on the MEDLINE, SciELO, LILACS, and PEDro databases, by combining specific key words, followed by active manual searches by two independent researchers. Results and discussion Fifty-eight studies were included: three related to the trunk and 55 to the upper limb muscles, including handgrip and pinch strength assessments. The most investigated muscular groups were handgrip, elbow flexors/extensors, wrist extensors, and lateral pinch. Nine studies reported adequate reliability levels and the seated position was employed in the majority of the studies which assessed trunk, handgrip, and pinch strength, while the supine position was used for the other muscular groups. The number of trials most used was three, while the reported contractions and rest times were variable. Final considerations Most studies reported the positioning and/or the data collection protocols; however, there was no consensus on the standardization procedures. The only investigated psychometric property was reliability. Few studies evaluated the trunk muscles and other psychometric properties.

Apresentar a versão em Português-Brasil do Timed "Up and Go" Assessment of Biomechanical Strategies (TUG-ABS), instrumento para avaliação clínica da mobilidade funcional de indivíduos com hemiparesia pós Acidente Vascular Cerebral (AVC), e investigar a sua validade de construto considerando a perspectiva de fisioterapeutas brasileiros da área neurofuncional. Método. Onze fisioterapeutas simularam o uso clínico do TUG-ABS com os seus pacientes e responderam a um questionário aberto com questões essenciais para se determinar a validade de construto por métodos contemporâneos. Para análise, foi utilizada metodologia qualitativa. Resultados. Os profissionais foram capazes de apontar informações novas e relevantes ao processo de avaliação e de tomada de decisão clínica ao utilizar o TUG-ABS, de descrever interpretações/julgamentos e ou raciocínios clínicos com base na interpretação dos seus resultados e avaliaram de forma positiva o seu sistema de pontuação. Conclusão. O TUG-ABS demonstrou adequada validade de construto sob a perspectiva de fisioterapeutas brasileiros. O instrumento forneceu medidas que dão suporte aos pressupostos teóricos a partir dos quais foi desenvolvido e informações relevantes ao processo de avaliação clínica da mobilidade de hemiparéticos pós-AVC. Portanto, foi reconhecido o valor clínico do TUG-ABS para a identificação de estratégias biomecânicas relacionadas à mobilidade funcional de indivíduos hemiparéticos pós-AVC.Unitermos. To present the Brazilian version of the Timed "Up and Go" Assessment of Biomechanical Strategies (TUG-ABS-Portuguese-Brazil), a clinical tool to assess functional mobility of subjects with hemiparesis due to stroke during the performance of the Timed "Up and Go" test, and investigate its construct validity considering the perspective of Brazilian physical therapists (PTs). Method. Eleven PTs applied the TUG-ABS within their patients and answered a questionnaire related to the clinical value of the TUG-ABS (construct validity by contemporary methods). Qualitative methodology was applied to data analysis. Results. The PTs were able to point out the relevant information to clinical evaluation and decision making provided by the TUG-ABS, to describe interpretations/judgements and clinical reasoning based upon the interpretation of the results provided by the TUG-ABS and assessed as positive the score system. Conclusion. The TUG-ABS showed adequate construct validity according to the perspective of the Brazilian PTs. Introduction Evaluation of sit-to-stand and stand-to-sit activities is used by physical therapists in patients with neurological and musculoskeletal disorders. Sit-to-stand activity presents different descriptions of phases and movements; however the phases of stand-to-sit activity have not been established yet.Objectives To describe the movements during stand-to-sit activity and create an evaluation protocol.Materials and methods Stand-to-sit activity was described on anterior and lateral views based on the observation of 27 healthy subjects. The body segments chosen to analyze were feet, ankles, knees, hips, pelvis, trunk, spine, upper limbs, head and cervical spine. The movements of body segments were described as adduction and abduction, eversion and inversion, valgus and varus, neutral position and asymmetry. The protocol was assessed with questionnaires answered by 12 physiotherapists experts in the area.Results Stand-to-sit activity was divided in 4 phases: 1- "Neutral position", 2- "Pre-squat", 3- "Squat" and 4- "Stabilization". Two models of protocols were developed considering 5 body segments to the anterior view and 7 segments for the lateral view.Conclusion Stand-to-sit activity was described in 4 phases with sequential movements of each body segment. These protocols allow physiotherapists to identify unusual movements of body segments during the stand-to-sit activity.
