Functional evaluation is one of the pillars of elderly home care for planning of interventions targeting the autonomy of this population. To verify Functional Independence Measure (FIM) in senior patients on a home care program. Retrospective quantitative study with elderly patients assisted by a home care service in the city of Curitiba, from August 2012 to December 2016. The following information was collected: gender, age, clinical diagnosis, and mean FIM scores at admission and discharge. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were met, descriptive statistics was used and, for association of variables, Wilcoxon’s and Spearman’s tests were applied. 1,614 patients were included, with predominance of women (n = 953; 59.53%), mean age of 78.7 ± 9.2 years, clinical diagnoses of diseases mostly affecting the central nervous system (CNS), the respiratory system, the joint and musculoskeletal system, and the circulatory system. The initial mean FIM was 50.56 points, while the final one was 55.36 points, with significant difference – Z = -5.09, p = 0.0001. Most seniors presented maximum to moderate dependence; however, a significant improvement in FIM after the health care provided in their homes was observed in patients with minimum dependence or modified independence.

O Traumatismo Cranioencefálico (TCE) é considerado um problema de saúde pública com elevada morbimortalidade e altos custos governamentais. Os índices prognósticos são ferramentas de avaliação e estão relacionados com a evolução clínica do paciente. Nessa perspectiva, o APACHE II é uma importante ferramenta para avaliar o prognóstico de pacientes críticos vitimas de TCE. O objetivo desse estudo foi correlacionar a gravidade dos pacientes vítimas de TCE admitidos nas UTIs, através do APACHE II, com a incidência de complicações respiratórias associadas. Foram avaliados 24 prontuários de pacientes vítimas de TCE hospitalizados nas UTIs do Hospital de Urgência de Teresina (HUT) entre os meses de junho de 2011 a maio de 2012. Houve predominância de pacientes do gênero masculino e a idade média foi de 27±7,7 anos. Em pacientes com valores do APACHE II maior ou igual a 20 observou-se uma maior ocorrência de complicações respiratórias (62,5%), sendo a pneumonia a mais comum, e aqueles que tiveram complicações respiratórias apresentaram mortalidade maior (33%). Portanto, o APACHE II é de grande valia para determinar o prognóstico de complicações respiratórias nos pacientes vítimas de TCE.

Objective: To characterize the level of acuity, severity and intensity of care of adults and older adults admitted to Intensive Care Units and to identify the predictors of severity with their respective predictive capacity according to the age group. Method: A retrospective cohort based on the analysis of medical records of individuals admitted to eight adult intensive care units in the city of São Paulo. The clinical characteristics at admission in relation to severity profile and intensity of care were analyzed through association and correlation tests. The predictors were identified by linear regression and the predictive capacity through the ROC curve. Results: Of the 781 cases (41.1% from older adults), 56.2% were males with a mean age of 54.1 ± 17.3 years. The burden of the disease, the organic dysfunction and the number of devices were the predictors associated with greater severity among adults and older adults, in which the organic dysfunction had the highest predictive capacity (80%) in both groups. Conclusion: Adults and older adults presented a similar profile of severity and intensity of care in admission to the Intensive Care Unit. Organic dysfunction was the factor with the best ability to predict severity in adults and older adults.
