-Natural lignocellulosic fiber epicarp extracted from the babassu coconut (Orbignya speciosa) was chemically modified through reaction with molten maleic anhydride without solvent, with incorporation of 189.34 mg g -1 of carboxylic acid groups into the biopolymer structure. The success of this reaction was also confirmed by the presence of carboxylic acid bands at 1741 and 1164 cm -1 in the infrared spectrum. Identically, the same group is observed through 13 C NMR CP/MAS in the solid state, via high field signals in the 167 pm region. Both the precursor and the immobilized maleated biopolymers presented nearly the same thermal stability and similar crystallinity to cellulose. However, the pendant carboxylic groups have the ability to remove copper with maximum sorption through a batchwise process at pH 6.0, as expected from the point of zero charge, determined to be 6.45. The sorption kinetic data were fitted to pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order, Elovich-chemisorption and intra-particle diffusion models and the equilibrium data were fitted to the Langmuir, the Freundlich and Tenkim isotherm models. Taking into account a statistical error function and determination coefficients, the data were fit to the pseudo-first and pseudo-second order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models, with a maximum sorption capacity of copper ions of 55.09 mg g -1 . This value suggests the application of this biopolymer with incorporated carboxylate groups as a favorable agent for copper removal from appropriate systems.

A possibilidade do uso das cascas de laranja, resíduo agroindustrial da produção do suco da fruta, como possível material adsorvente do contaminante altamente tóxico, o Benzeno, para a descontaminação aquática, foi investigada. O melhor potencial de descontaminação foi observado no carvão de 450°C, pois a sua adsorção apresentou a melhor taxa de sorção quando comparada as temperaturas de 250 °C e 350°C, com uma média de 65% de retirada do contaminante. A adsorção do Benzeno pelos diferentes carvões ajustou-se melhor a isoterma de Lagmuir quando comparada a de Freundlich, tendo apresentado coeficientes de relação próximos de 1. The aim of this work was to develop and characterize microfibrillated cellulose (MFC)/pullulan bionanocomposites. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy suggested that the affinity between the two polymers resulted in new hydrogen bonding of the nanocomposite materials compared to pristine pullulan. At the same time, an increase in crystallinity was observed proportional to the amount of MFC used, as shown by the X-ray analyses. Accordingly, final films showed improved mechanical properties proportionally to the filler loading, with impressive elastic modulus and tensile strength of *4.50 GPa and *60 MPa, respectively, for the sample containing 10 % MFC. However, as demonstrated by the moisture sorption isotherms, the addition of MFC did not help reduce the amount of water adsorbed by the samples. In addition, the oxygen and water vapor permeability data clearly showed that final films still suffered high relative humidity values, whereas their barrier performance toward oxygen was excellent under dry conditions, with O 2 permeability coefficients (P 0 O 2 ) comparable with those of common high barrier films/ coatings. Finally, while the nanocomposites in the form of films had high haze values (from 23 to 40 %), the same nanocomposites in the form of coatings were decidedly more transparent, which suggests that their use as thin layers could be more suitable when the ''seethrough'' capability must be preserved, for example in food packaging applications.
