Microfibrillated cellulose (MFC): pullulan bionanocomposite films

Abstract: The aim of this work was to develop and characterize microfibrillated cellulose (MFC)/pullulan bionanocomposites. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy suggested that the affinity between the two polymers resulted in new hydrogen bonding of the nanocomposite materials compared to pristine pullulan. At the same time, an increase in crystallinity was observed proportional to the amount of MFC used, as shown by the X-ray analyses. Accordingly, final films showed improved mechanical properties proportionally to … Show more

“…Oxygen barrier issues will be considered first here, mainly in recognition of the outstanding performance levels reported by some authors (Fukuzimi et al 2009;Syverud and Stenius 2009; Aulin et al 2010a;Cozzolino et al 2014;Kisonen et al 2015). It seems likely that at least part of the recent spurt of academic and industrial attention directed toward nanocellulose films in packaging can be traced to a superior ability to block the passage of oxygen.…”

“…Indeed, high levels of resistance to oxygen have been reported from studies focusing on NFC (Fukuzimi et al 2009;Syverud and Stenius 2009; Aulin et al. 2010a;Cozzolino et al 2014;Kisonen et al 2015).…”

“…Figure 6 compares the molecular structure changes of MCC with and without metal ions during alkaline degradation. In the FTIR spectrum, 3400 cm -1 expressed the hydroxyl absorption peaks in the intra-and inter-molecular hydrogen bonds (Dayal et al 2013;Cozzolino et al 2014;Rozenberga et al 2016). The characteristic band at 2900 cm −1 was attributed to the C-H stretching vibration.…”
