Objective: To monitor the growth of high-risk babies in the first year of life. Methods: Analytical, cohort study, conducted with 237 babies born in Maringá -PR, between May 1 to October 31, 2008, under the Program for the Surveillance of At-Risk Infants. Results: Growth changes were present in 188 (79.3%) infants and occurred mainly after the first trimester of life. A slower than expected growth rate showed statistical association with maternal age of less than 18 years, education of less than 8 years, presence of congenital anomalies, and birth weight greater than or equal to 2,500g born at term. Conclusion: The evaluation of growth in at-risk infants should include a multidimensional analysis, considering the biological and maturational aspects of each specific risk condition, and adaptation of the baby and his/her family on this evolutionary path. Métodos: Estudo analítico, do tipo coorte, realizado com 237 bebês nascidos em Maringá -PR, entre 1º de maio a 31 de outubro de 2008, incluídOs no Programa de Vigilância do Bebê de Risco. Resultados: As alterações de crescimento estiveram presentes em 188 (79,3%) bebês e ocorreram sobretudo, após o 1º trimestre de vida. A velocidade de crescimento abaixo da esperada apresentou associação estatística com idade materna menor que 18 anos, tempo de estudo inferior a 8 anos, presença de anomalia congênita, peso ao nascer maior ou igual a 2.500g e nascimento a termo. Conclusão: A avaliação do crescimento dos bebês de risco deve abarcar uma análise multidimensional, considerando os aspectos biológicos e maturacionais específicos a cada condição de risco e a adaptação do bebê e de sua família nesse percurso evolutivo. Resultados: Las alteraciones de crecimiento estuvieron presentes en 188 (79,3%) bebés y ocurrieron sobre todo, después del 1º trimestre de vida. La velocidad de crecimiento debajo de la esperada presentó asociación estadística con edad materna menor de 18 años, tiempo de estudio inferior a 8 años, presencia de anomalía congénita, peso al nacer mayor o igual a 2.500 gr. y nacimiento a término. Conclusión: La evaluación del crecimiento de los bebés de riesgo debe abarcar un análisis multidimensional, considerando los aspectos biológicos y de madurez específicos a cada condición de riesgo y la adaptación del bebé y su familia en ese recorrido evolutivo.

Objective: To measure the influence, both of family life upon professional activity and of professional activity upon family life. Methods: A quantitative, descriptive, exploratory study, using a questionnaire with two versions -male and female -with a sample of 92 couples with children younger than six years, living in Rio Grande City -RS. Results: We found that physical and mental fatigue related to working conditions influenced family chores, causing discouragement and irritability. Men presented major concerns regarding the limited time available to the family due to professional responsibilities. Viewed as very influential for family support, dialogue contributed to the resolution of professional problems and creation of an environment that was conducive to addressing the family challenges impacted by work. The parents felt that family life did not affect career, but reported the influence of thinking about the family at work. Conclusion: Few influences were identified that affected the balance between family life and professional activity, which, in general, contradicted other studies in the literature. Métodos: Estudo exploratório descritivo de abordagem quantitativa, que utilizou um questionário com duas versões -feminina e masculina -aplicado em amostra de 92 casais com filhos de idade até seis anos, residentes na cidade do Rio Grande -RS. Resultados: Constatou-se que o cansaço físico e mental relacionado ao trabalho, influenciou nas tarefas familiares, causando desânimo e irritabilidade. Os homens apresentaram maior preocupação com o pouco tempo disponível em família em razão da profissão. Visualizou-se como muito influente o apoio familiar, tornando o diálogo contribuinte na resolução dos problemas profissionais e na criação de um ambiente propício ao enfrentamento dos desafios impostos pelo trabalho. Os pais consideraram que a vida familiar não prejudica sua atividade profissional, mas referiram influência do pensamento familiar no trabalho. Conclusão: Poucas influências foram identificadas que prejudicam a conciliação entre vida familiar e atividade profissional, o que, no geral, contrariou demais estudos encontrados na literatura. Background: The use of natural resources for the treatment of acute respiratory infections in children is a widespread practice within traditional communities, especially by women by being the primary caregivers. This study aimed to perform ethnobiological survey of plants and animals used for the treatment of acute respiratory infections in children of a traditional community in the municipality of Barbalha, Ceará, Brazil. Methods: It is a descriptive exploratory study with a quantitative approach, developed in Sítio Santo Antônio, in the municipality of Barbalha, Ceará, Brazil. As a tool for data collection, was applied a questionnaire and a semi-structured interview. Data analysis used descriptive statistics (simple and percentage rate) and the Relative Frequency of Citation. Results:The research included a total of 54 informants. In total, there were 38 species cited. According to the Relative Frequency of Citation the following species were the most cited: Ocimum basilicum L. Among the symptoms mentioned by the research subjects to treat the acute respiratory infections in childhood, there were: fever; cough; coughing with secretions; sore throat; hoarseness; tiredness; nasal congestion. Conclusions: It is important the knowledge about the usefulness of natural resources as alternative practices in diseases treatment, seeking to rescue popular knowledge used in the traditional community and fomenting the need to consider cultural aspects in the full practice to children´s health care.
