Objective: To understand the experience of partners of women with breast cancer. Method: This was a qualitative study, based on the theoretical-methodological framework of existential and phenomenological psychology, and carried out with the partners of women with breast cancer who attended a center for rehabilitation after mastectomy. The data were collected in interviews between June and November 2014, based on a guiding question. Results: Ten partners participated in the study. On discovering the disease, the partners experienced emotional distress caused by the fear of losing their partners. Before this suffering, they demonstrated the ability to react: willingness to provide care, to comfort and to support the women in search of treatment, and together, seek to reverse adverse situations. They also showed sensitivity and recognized the intense emotional suffering of the women caused by the challenges faced throughout the course of treatment. Conclusion: The present study showed the intense suffering of the partners of women with breast cancer and their difficulty to ask for help. Thus, health professionals must be alert, addressing their needs throughout the treatment process to mitigate suffering.

Procedeu-se uma revisão integrativa da literatura nacional, buscando artigos relacionados ao tema na plataforma SciELO, utilizando-se os buscadores "câncer de mama" e "vivência", sem restrições com relação ao período de publicação ou tipo de artigo, sendo recuperadas onze publicações. Da análise integrativa das publicações, conclui-se que a experiência de cada paciente com seu processo de doença é pessoal; porém, guarda algumas similaridades que devem ser identificadas e corretamente trabalhadas, posto que sentimentos conflitantes podem coexistir. Tais conflitos são evidenciados na identificação de distorções de autoimagem, sexualidade e a incerteza sobre o futuro, em contraposição à coragem para o enfrentamento, ressignificação da vida e a percepção do apoio familiar. Keywords:Breast neoplasms Life change events Patient care team ABSTRACT Breast cancer is the most incident neoplasm in women (except for non-melanoma skin cancer). This fact justifies a concern on how it impacts on the life of the patients. We proceeded an integrative review of the national literature, in SciELO database, under the following keywords: "breast cancer" and " life experience." No restriction regarding the period of publication was imposed. We retrieved eleven articles. From the analysis of the publications, we concluded that the experience of each patient with their disease process is personal, but it does have some similarities that must be identified and correctly worked out since conflicting feelings can coexist. We highlight distortions on selfimage, issues regarding sexuality and uncertainties about the future as negative factors. Sexuality is considered an important aspect of holistic care, but research has shown that it is often not considered, as it should be, in health services. Addressing clients’ sexuality requires a multidisciplinary approach and is not the responsibility of a single professional. The literature underlines that university students or those working in hospitals and other health care facilities are not adequately prepared to meet patients’ needs regarding sexuality. The objective of this study was, therefore, to review the scientific literature addressing training courses for health professionals in sexuality between 2000 and 2020. Several studies have shown enhancement in health care professionals’ ability to deal with patients’ sexuality issues after participating in sexuality education programs, regardless of the course load and modality, even if the long-term effects have still to be proved. Health care professionals therefore require education in the area of sexuality, regardless of their discipline. According to the articles reviewed, in order to improve the performance and comfort level of health care professionals to deal with patients’ sexuality, investments in training are necessary. Further evaluations of interdisciplinary sexuality education programmes should use larger samples and explore the differences across disciplines.
