ABSTRACTThe objective of this study was to verify the right-left spatial orientation of students enrolled in the initial grades of school. 55 students enrolled in the third to fifth grades were evaluated in schools in Rio de Janeiro between the ages of 7 and 12 years, of which 34 were enrolled in a municipal school located inside a favela (IF) and 21 in a private school located in a middle class neighborhood (MC). The Piaget-Head test was used for data collection. It could be verified that in all investigated groups, motor age (MA) was inferior to chronological age (CA). In the IF group, MA was 7.7 years whereas CA was 8.4 years. The MA in the MC group was 8.8 years while the CA = 9.4 years. The discrepancy between chronological age and motor age in right-left spatial orientation was common to all groups investigated.
