The beneficial effects of Montelukast against 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo- p -dioxin toxicity in female reproductive system in rats

Abstract: PURPOSE:To determine the toxic effect of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) on reproductive system and the beneficial effects of Montelukast (ML) with histological and biochemical analysis. METHODS:Rats were randomly divided into four equal groups (control, TCDD, ML and TCDD+ML). Tissue samples were collected on day 60 and oxidative status and histological alterations were analyzed. RESULTS:The results showed a significant increase in oxidative and histological damage on uterine and ovarian tissues. Ot… Show more

“…Similarly to previously reported TCDD-induced changes in granulosal gene expression [ 23 ], the most of DELs (15 out of 22) were detected after 3 h of TCDD treatment. Since TCDD was shown to induce oxidative stress in the ovary [ 53 , 54 ], the altered expression of lncRNAs after 3 h of TCDD treatment may be associated with the regulation of the early cellular stress response to TCDD.…”

“…In animal studies, TCDD exposure has been shown to induce testicular damage and QCT may reduce the male reproductive toxicity of TCDD due to its antagonistic activity against AhR which is activated by TCDD (Ciftci et al, 2012). Melekoglu et al (2016) reported that TCDD and related substances promote the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the reproductive system. Additionally, several studies have shown that TCDD exposure results in oxidative damage to many tissues, such as the kidney, liver, and testis (Palaniswamy et al, 2014;Slezak et al, 2000).…”

“…Their findings show gene expression to confer with a significant protective effect in women in regard to depression, rationalizing further examination of cys-LTs and sex differences in mental illness. Importantly, MTK treatment has been reported to affect endometrial conditions ( 119 ) as well as other female hormonal aspects ( 57 , 120 , 121 ). For example, MTK was found to exert better control of asthmatic symptoms in women than men ( 57 ).…”
