Study on the effect of black cumin (Nigella sativa Linn.) on experimental renal ischemia-reperfusion injury in rats

Abstract: PURPOSE:To evaluate the effect of Black cumin (Nigella sativa Linn.) pre-treatment on renal ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) induced injury in the rats. METHODS:A total of 40 male Wistar rats were randomly allocated into five equal groups including Sham, I/R model and three I/R+ Black cumin (0.5, 1 and 2%)-treated groups. I/R groups' kidneys were subjected to 60 min of global ischemia at 37°C followed by 24 h of reperfusion. At the end of reperfusion period, the rats were euthanized. Superoxide dismutase, catalase a… Show more

“…Absence of Ginkgo biloba hazard effects [ 49 ], low effect of high kidney related-serum parameters [ 50 , 51 ], renal injury attenuating effect [ 14 16 ], antioxidant effect [ 52 ] and fatty acid regulation effect [ 53 55 ], encouraged us to use it to decrease nephrotoxic effects in diabetic rats.…”

“…In recent years, an attention has been drawn to various plants and plant-derived compounds for the treatment of kidney diseases (Mousavi 2015;Mohebbati et al 2016). Among the promising medicinal plants, NS, commonly known as Kalonji in India and Pakistan, has been used traditionally for various ailments (Boskabady et al 2007;Qidwai et al 2009).…”

“…Many studies have shown that NS have anti-infl ammatory eff ect in various models (Boskabady et al 2008;Boskabady et al 2011a;Boskabady et al 2011b;Boskabady et al 2011c;Gholamnezhad et al 2015). It has been demonstrated that NS treatment increases CAT, GSH-Px, and SOD activities in the renal ischemia-reperfusion injury (Mousavi 2015). Th e results of another study have shown that NS oil may have protective eff ects against the hepatotoxicity and renal toxicity induced by ethanol through decreasing lipid peroxidation, infl ammation, and apoptosis (Pourbakhsh et al 2014).…”
