Abstract: PURPOSE: To reproduce the experimental model of gastroschisis in chicken embryos and to prove that the histopathological changes that occur in this model can be compared to those in human gastroschisis. METHODS: A total of 278 Leghorn hen (Gallus domesticus) eggs were used. The embryos were divided into three groups: the gastroschisis group, in which the umbilical cord was opened through an orifice made in the eggshell, and the intestinal loops were exposed to a mixture of amniotic liquid and allantoid; the mi… Show more

“…Morbidity and mortality of the delay in the beginning of the intestine functioning associated to a rare prevalence of this disease, has motivated a variety of research centers into looking for solutions in studies using experimental animal models (sheep, rabbits, rats and chicken embryos) 5,6,14,15 . One of the main objectives in the gastroschisis treatment is to prevent the harm to the fetus's intestine in small animals such as the rats because it is possible and has additional advantages like low costs, increased number of fetus per brood and for properly imitate the physiopathology of the human gastroschisis 6 .…”
