Effects of acetylsalicylic acid and acetic acid solutions in VX2 carcinoma cells: In vitro analysis

Abstract: PURPOSE: To analyze, in vitro, the effects of acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) and acetic acid solutions on VX2 carcinoma cells in suspension and to examine the correlation between these effects and neoplastic cell death. METHODS: The VX2 tumor cells (10(7) cells/ml) were incubated in solutions containing differing concentrations (2.5% and 5%) of either acetylsalicylic acid or acetic acid, or in saline solution (controls). Every five minutes, cell viability was tested (using the trypan blue test) and analyzed un… Show more

“…In this context, it is of paramount importance to acknowledge the definite need for the development of new drugs to provide specific and more efficient therapeutic alternatives to completely eliminate endometriotic lesions, prevent recurrences, and has none or low side effects 6 . Therefore, based on our previously tested different doses and periods of time in other experimental rabbit models [7][8][9][10][11] , the present study was delineated to evaluate whether a higher aspirin concentration and longer follow-up of outcomes (namely, 20% aspirin and 20 days after intralesional injection, respectively) could positively impact on completely reducing peritoneal endometrial tissue.…”

“…This ability to destroy tumor cells has already been investigated by our group [6][7][8][9][10] in other reports using experimental tumors (Ehrlich and VX-2) and by others 27,[31][32][33][34][35][36][37][38] .…”

“…In our research group, we had the opportunity to study and scientifically prove cytolytic effects of aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) and its derivatives, either in vitro or in vivo on several experimental models [6][7][8][9][10] . Following this line of research, the purpose of this experimental study was to evaluate the effects of aspirin on normal lymph nodes of rabbits as basis for its later use on lymph nodes affected by tumor.…”

“…VX2 tumour cells derived from rabbits were provided by the Cell Resource Center for Biomedical Research, Institute of Development, Aging and Cancer, Tohoku University. They were maintained in Dulbecco's modified Eagle medium (Nacalai Tesque Inc., Kyoto, Japan) supplemented with L-glutamine, 5% foetal bovine serum (FBS) (Gibco, New York, NY) and 1% penicillin/streptomycin (Sigma, Aldrich, St Louis, MO) [12].…”
