In vitro schistosomicidal effects of the essential oil of Tagetes erecta

Abstract: Abstract:The in vitro schistosomicidal effects of the essential oil obtained from Tagetes erecta L. Asteraceae, leaves (TE-EO) collected in Brazil against Schistosoma mansoni worms are reported in this paper. The oil caused a significant decrease in the motor activity at 50 μg/mL as minimal concentration after 24 h. This oil also caused death of all the parasites and the separation of coupled pairs into individual male and female at 100 μg/mL after 24 h. The viability of adult worm groups treated with the TE-E… Show more

“…The essential oil from T. erecta leaves displays schistosomicidal properties and is utilized as antihelminthic in the Amazonia region (Stasi and Hiruma-Lima, 2002;Tonuci et al, 2012). The monoterpenes ␣-terpinolene, (E)-ocimenone, limonene, (Z)-␤-ocimene, linalool, dihydrotagetone, piperitone, piperitenone and (E)-tagetone are the main chemical constituents of this essential oil (Baslas and Singh, 1981;Krishna et al, 2004;Ogunwande and Olawore, 2006;Sefidkon et al, 2004;Sharma et al, 1961;Singh et al, 2003;Tonuci et al, 2012).…”

“…This scenario emphasizes the increasing need for the development of novel and inexpensive drugs against schistosomiasis. In order to provide new hit/lead structures, which can be used in drug development to control schistosomiasis, the search for schistosomicidal compounds, mainly from natural sources, has been intensified in the last years [58]. …”
