Evaluation of antimalarial, free-radical-scavenging and insecticidal activities of Artemisia scoparia and A. Spicigera, Asteraceae

Abstract: Artemisia species (Asteraceae), widespread throughout the world, are a group of important medicinal plants. The extracts of two medicinal plants of this genus, Artemisia scoparia Waldst. & Kit. and A. spicigera C. Koch, were evaluated for potential antimalarial, free-radical-scavenging and insecticidal properties, using the heme biocrystallisation and inhibition assay, the DPPH assay and the contact toxicity bioassay using the pest Tribolium castaneum, respectively. The methanol extracts of both species showed… Show more

“…Ao realizar o mesmo ensaio da redução do DPPH, Afshar et al (2011) De acordo com os resultados, quando se avalia a atividade antioxidante (AA) do extrato e frações das folhas, observa-se que comparado ao padrão rutina (considerando este padrão com 100% de AA) a FAE apresentou AA superior. Este resultado também é observado quando se analisa a FAE obtida das cascas do caule (Tabela 2).…”

“…Then, in the combination therapy step, we observed that this extract particularly in a longer period of pretreatments, increased the sensitization of HeLa cells to radiation. Some of the biological components of Artemisia genus are coumarins, flavonoids, phenylpropanoids, glycosides, sterols and terpenoids, (28). Polyphenols, a group of compounds with high antioxidant activity, are rich in ethanolic and aqueous extracts.…”
