Effect of organic fertilizer sources on biomass and essential oil production of Plectranthus neochilus SchlechterApplication of organic fertilizers to medicinal aromatic plants usually has a positive effect on biomass and essential oil production. Plectranthus neochilus Schlechter was cultivated with three organic fertilizer sources. This study evaluated the biomass production and content, yield and chemical composition of the essential oil. The seedlings, after acclimatization, were transplanted to 10L pots and placed under a protected environment. The experiment consisted of four treatments and four replications, with five pots per plot. The treatments included: without organic fertilizer (control); cattle manure 60 t ha -1 ; chicken manure 30 t ha -1 ; and organic compost 60 t ha -1 . Plants were harvested at 120 days after planting. Neste contexto, tendo por fim avaliar a resposta de plantas de Plectranthus neochilus Schltr., cultivadas com diferentes fontes de adubos orgânicos, o presente trabalho estudou a produção de biomassa, teor, rendimento e composição química do óleo essencial. As mudas, após a aclimatização, foram transplantadas para vasos de dez litros, acondicionados em casa de vegetação. O experimento foi constituído por quatro tratamentos e quatro repetições (16 parcelas), sendo cada parcela composta por cinco vasos. Os tratamentos foram: ausência de adubo orgânico (testemunha); aplicação de 60 t ha -1 de esterco bovino; 30 t ha -1 de esterco avícola; 60 t ha -1 de composto orgânico. Aos 120 dias de cultivo, as plantas foram colhidas e uma parte das folhas frescas foi destinada à extração do óleo essencial. O restante do material vegetal foi seco em estufa, até atingir peso constante, para a determinação da biomassa seca. As análises químicas do óleo foram realizadas por cromatografia gasosa (CG-DIC e CG-EM). As fontes de adubo orgânico testadas promoveram diferenças entre os tratamentos em relação à produção de biomassa, rendimento e composição do óleo essencial de P. neochilus. A utilização de diferentes fertilizantes orgânicos não modificou o teor de óleo volátil. The organic fertilizer sources showed differences between treatments related to biomass production, biomass distribution, essential oil yield and chemical composition in Plectranthus neochilus. The use of different organic ferilizers did not change the content of volatile oil.

Lamiaceae contains many species known for their aromatic properties that are produced by the production of essential oils in glandular trichomes. Hyptis is one of the most common genera of Lamiaceae in the Brazilian fl ora, and includes several species with medicinal value. However, studies on the morphology and functioning of their glandular trichomes are lacking. We analyzed the morphology, histochemistry and ultrastructure of the glandular trichomes in leaves of H. villosa, emphasizing the diff erential distribution of actin fi laments and microtubules in cells secreting hydrophilic and lipophilic compounds. Four morphotypes of glandular trichomes were identifi ed. Total lipid, terpenes, alkaloids, phenolic compounds, proteins and polysaccharides were histochemically detected in all morphotyes. Th is evidences the mixed nature of the secretions of this species, although there are diff erences in the prevalence of lipophilic and hydrophilic components among the glandular morphotypes and among the cells of the same trichome. Th e actin microfi laments are more abundant in cells that secrete mainly hydrophilic compounds, and microtubules predominate in cells that secrete lipophilic compounds. Our results corroborate the correlation between the glandular morphotype and the composition of the secretion produced, with a diff erential distribution of the cytoskeletal elements according to the prevalence of either hydrophilic or lipophilic substances.

The brine shrimp (Artemia salina Leach) lethality bioassay offers an advantage in standardization and quality control of botanical products. This test is well correlated with antitumor activity (cytotoxicity) and can be used to monitor the activity of bioactive natural products. This paper reports the bioactivity of ethanol extracts from seven medicinal plants from the Northeast of Brazil (Acmella uliginosa, Ageratum conyzoides, Eugenia uniflora, Plectranthus neochilus, Moringa oleifera, Justicia pectoralis and Equisetum sp.) against Artemia salina. Biological activity was evaluated for extracts at 1, 10, 100, and 1000 µg/mL in triplicate, and the mean lethal concentration values (LC 50 ) were obtained by probit analysis. The species Acmella uliginosa showed the highest bioactivity, and its flower extract was more active than its leaf extract. Keywords
