Mauritia flexuosa L. f., Arecaceae, is an endemic species of South America. This species was studied with the intent to isolate the constituents of its roots. After the fractionation of the n-hexane and methanolic extracts from the roots of M. flexuosa, six triterpenes were obtained: friedelin, taraxerone, lupenyl acetate, lupenone, betulin and betulinic acid, along with three flavonoids: rutin, quercitrin and quercetin. All the compounds were identified by analysis of NMR and MS data and comparison with the literature. All those compounds are been reported for the first time in Mauritia, and the chemosystematic significance of the flavonoids isolated in this genus is discussed.

Silveira et al (2005) showed that both ethanolic and hexanic extracts of M. flexuosa fruits were active against S. aureus and P. aeruginosa, but did not significantly inhibit E. coli. Huang et al (2011) demonstrated that fatty acids exhibit patterns of inhibition against oral bacteria with specificity that relates more to the bacterial species than the general structural characteristics of the microorganisms.…”

In this study, the chemical composition of the peel and pulp of Mauritia flexuosa fruits were analyzed and the antimicrobial activity of ethanolic extracts from these fruits was evaluated using in vitro tests. Chemical composition analysis with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) indicated the presence of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids. The peel extracts (ECBU) presented 54.41% and the pulp (EPBU) presented 94.05% of the saturated fatty acids lauric, myristic, palmitic, stearic, oleic and linoleic acids. The antimicrobial activities were performed using the diffusion and micro-dilution (MIC) methods. ECBU was active against the bacteria Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus at a concentration of 200 mg mL -1 , but it was not active against the yeasts Candida albicans and Candida parapsilosis using the diffusion method. The MIC results showed that ECBU was active against the tested bacteria at concentrations > 12.5 mg mL -1 and EPBU was active at concentrations > 25.0 mg mL -1 . This was probably due to higher sensibility of the method. The results indicated that the peel and pulp extracts of M. flexuosa present antibacterial activity and that ECBU is an especially promising potential candidate for the prospection of new pharmaceutical compounds.

RESUMO:Bases cremosas são muito utilizadas em farmácias de manipulação para incorporação de diversos ativos com variadas aplicabilidades. O uso de ativos da biodiversidade brasileira levou ao desenvolvimento de inúmeros produtos, nas mais diferentes formas cosméticas. O óleo de buriti (Mauritia flexuosa L.) tem se destacado no uso tópico em função de suas propriedades como lubrificar e regenerar a barreira hidrolipídica da pele frequentemente submetida a lesões. Buscando a tendência do uso de produtos naturais em preparações dermatológicas o objetivo deste trabalho visou a produção e avaliação de um fitocosmético hidratante contendo óleo de buriti. Três formulações foram produzidas (F1, F2 e F3) sendo submetidas à avaliação físico-química e estudo preditivo da estabilidade. A amostra F3 também foi submetida à análise sensorial a fim de se estabelecer o grau de aceitação da mesma entre os consumidores potenciais. As formulações propostas se mostraram agradáveis e adequadas sob aspecto sensorial. Os testes efetuados foram úteis na caracterização das formulações. Palavras Chave: Avaliação Sensorial, Fitocosmético, Óleo de buriri. ABSTRACT:Creams are widely used in drugstores for incorporation of various assets with different applicability. The use of Brazilian biodiversity led to the development of many products in differents forms cosmetics. Buriti oil (Mauritia flexuosa L.) has been highlighted in topical use because of its properties like regenerate the hydrolipidic barrier often subjected to damage skin. Seeking the trend of using natural products in dermatological preparations the objective of this work was aimed at the production and evaluation of a phytocosmetic moisturizer containing Buriti oil. Three formulations were produced (F1, F2 and F3) being subjected to physical and chemical evaluation and predictive study of stability. The F3 sample was also subjected to sensory analysis in order to establish the degree of acceptance of it among potential consumers. Formulations proposals proved pleasant and appropriate under sensory aspect. The tests performed were useful in the characterization of the formulations.
