RESUMO: Diversas espécies de Calea são utilizadas como medicinais e vários estudos químicos têm sido conduzidos para identifi car compostos relevantes no gênero, no entanto, poucos enfocam aspectos morfoanatômicos. Este trabalho tem por objetivo caracterizar morfologicamente a folha e o caule de Calea unifl ora Less., a fi m de fornecer subsídios para a identifi cação da espécie. O material foi submetido às microtécnicas fotônica e eletrônica de varredura usuais. A lâmina foliar possui epiderme uniestratifi cada revestida por cutícula delgada e estriada. Em ambas as faces, ocorrem estômatos anomocíticos e anisocíticos, além de tricomas glandulares e tectores. Estes são pluricelulares e unisseriados, com ápice agudo. Os glandulares podem ser pluricelulares e plurisseriados ou capitados e inseridos em depressão na epiderme. O mesofi lo é isobilateral e a nervura central é biconvexa, sendo percorrida por um feixe vascular colateral. O caule mostra secção circular e epiderme unisseriada, com tricomas similares aos da folha. Colênquima angular e clorênquima alternam-se no córtex, fi bras perivasculares apõem-se ao fl oema, o arranjo vascular é colateral e a medula compõe-se de células parenquimáticas. Dutos secretores acompanham o sistema vascular na folha e no caule.Unitermos: Asteraceae, Calea unifl ora, morfoanatomia.ABSTRACT: "Anatomical characters of the leaf and stem of Calea unifl ora Less., Asteraceae". Various species of Calea are considered medicinal and several investigations have been carried out to identify relevant chemical substances in the genus, however, few studies have dealt with morphoanatomical aspects. This work aimed to analyse the morphological characters of the leaf and stem of Calea unifl ora Less., in order to contribute for the species identifi cation. The plant material was prepared according to usual light and scanning microtechniques. The blade has uniseriate epidermis coated with thin and striate cuticle. Anomocytic and anisocytic stomata are seen on both surfaces, as well as glandular and non-glandular trichomes. The latter is pluricellular and uniseriate, with acute apex. The glandular trichomes are pluricellular and multiseriate or capitate and located in epidermal depression. The mesophyll is isobilateral, and the midrib is biconvex and traversed by a collateral vascular bundle. The stem shows circular transection and uniseriate epidermis, with trichomes similar to the leaf. Angular collenchyma and chlorenchyma alternate in the cortex, perivascular fi bres adjoin the phloem, the vascular arrangement is collateral and the pith consists of parenchymatic cells. Secretory ducts are associated with the vascular system of the leaf and stem.

Calea L. is a genus of shrubs and perennial herbs belonging to Asteraceae family. It is a very well‐known genus, consisting of approximately 125 neotropical species. Calea genus is a rich source of phytochemicals, and some of its species have been used in folk medicine to treat several health problems such as diabetes, arterial hypertension, respiratory and gastrointestinal disorders, gastric ulcers, and inflammation. Many studies have demonstrated the pharmacological potential of this genus, including antinociceptive, antihypertensive, antidiarrheal, antimicrobial, anti‐inflammatory, antidiabetic, antiproliferative, and cytotoxic activities. Moreover, bioactive constituents related to these properties are mainly sesquiterpene lactones and phenolic derivatives. In this review, we compiled the literature data up to December 2016, furnishing a comprehensive survey about medicinal uses, chemistry, and biological activities from Calea species. Bibliographic search was performed in several search engines using “Calea” as search keyword. Further, a manual literature search of references found in the selected studies was also conducted. There was no initial time limit.

The literature shows that phenolic compounds possess important antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities; however, the mechanism underlying these effects is not elucidated yet. The genus Calea is used in folk medicine to treat rheumatism, respiratory diseases, and digestive problems. In this context, some phenolic compounds were isolated with high purity from Calea uniflora Less. and identified as noreugenin (NRG) and α-hydroxy-butein (AH-BU). The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of these compounds on cell viability, the activity of myeloperoxidase (MPO), and apoptosis of mouse neutrophils using ex vivo tests. Furthermore, the effect of these compounds on the cytokines, interleukin 1 beta (IL-1β), interleukin 17A (IL-17A), and interleukin 10 (IL-10), and oxidative stress was investigated by analyzing lipid peroxidation (the concentration of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS)) and activities of antioxidant enzymes, superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione S-transferase (GST), using a murine model of neutrophilic inflammation. The NRG and AH-BU reduce MPO activity and increase neutrophil apoptosis (p < 0.05). These compounds reduced the generation of oxygen reactive species and IL-1β and IL-17A levels but increased IL-10 levels (p < 0.05). This study demonstrated that NRG and AH-BU show a significant anti-inflammatory effect by inhibiting the MPO activity and increasing neutrophil apoptosis in primary cultures of mouse neutrophils. These effects were at least partially associated with blocking reactive species generation, inhibiting IL-1β and IL-17A, and increasing IL-10 levels.
