Aos 12 meses a criança apresenta novas aquisições de linguagem e locomoção que a permitem realizar movimentos de afastamento e reaproximação do cuidador. Assim, a mãe ocupa papel fundamental, pois deve proporcionar oportunidades para descobertas e favorecer explorações. Este estudo investigou o desenvolvimento da criança aos 12 meses e os sentimentos maternos em relação a esse momento. Participaram 28 mulheres, de nível socioeconômico variado, com idades entre 20 e 37 anos, cujos filhos tinham 12 meses. Foi realizada uma entrevista semi-estruturada sobre a experiência da maternidade e o desenvolvimento da criança. A análise de conteúdo revelou a riqueza das novas aquisições e seu impacto nos sentimentos maternos. As mães relataram sentimentos ambivalentes de gratificação e realização, mas também de maior demanda e dedicação. Dada a importância desse período, torna-se fundamental que a mãe seja capaz de adaptar-se às novas aquisições infantis e que esteja disponível para partilhar de suas experiências.

Challenges of motherhood in the voice of primiparous mothers: Initial difficulties

Objective. To identify the main difficulties first-time mothers experience in the postpartum period, during the first six months of the baby's life. Methods. Level I qualitative, exploratory-descriptive study. The sample consisted of 11 first-time mothers of full-term healthy newborns. The data were collected through the "focus group" method. The mothers' discourse was subject to content analysis, categorizing the registry units. Results. Three categories emerged from the data analyzed that indicate the mothers' main difficulties in this period: postpartum recovery; baby care; marital relationship. Conclusion.The results indicate that, although motherhood is an event marked by positive emotions, the difficulties that emerge in the mothers' daily life can interfere negatively in the quality of parenthood. In this scenario, the nurses play a determinant role in the enhancement of interventions that are sensitive to these needs and that, at the same time, favor these mothers and their families' empowerment, thus optimizing the children's development trajectories.Descriptors: adaptation; focus groups; mothers; parenting; postpartum period. CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE: Compromised maternal mental health (MMH) is considered to be a risk factor for child malnutrition in low income areas. Psychosocial variables associated with MMH are potentially different between urban and rural environments. The aim here was to investigate whether associations existed between MMH and selected sociodemographic risk factors and whether specific to urban or rural settings. DESIGN AND SETTING: Cross-sectional study on a representative population sample of mothers from the semiarid region of Alagoas. METHODS: Multistage sampling was used. The subjects were mothers of children aged up to 60 months. MMH was evaluated through the Self-Reporting Questionnaire-20. Mothers' nutritional status was assessed using the body mass index and waist circumference. Univariate analysis used odds ratios (OR) and chi-square. Logistic regression was performed separately for urban and rural subsamples using MMH as the dependent variable. RESULTS: The sample comprised 288 mothers. The prevalences of common mental disorders (CMD) in rural and urban areas were 56.2% and 43.8%, respectively (OR = 1.03; 95% CI: 0.64-1.63). In univariate analysis and logistic regression, the variable of education remained associated with MMH (OR = 2.2; 95% CI: 1.03-4.6) in urban areas. In rural areas, the variable of lack of partner remained associated (OR = 2.6; 95% CI: 1.01-6.7). CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of CMD is high among mothers of children aged up to two years in the semiarid region of Alagoas. This seems to be associated with lower educational level in urban settings and lack of partner in rural settings.
