Structure and diversity of restingas along a flood gradient in southeastern Brazil

Abstract: This study aimed to relate changes in structure and species diversity with edaphic variables (soil type and flooding regime) in a gradient of forest formations within the Brazilian restingas (coastal woodlands). The study was carried out in the Jacarenema Municipal Natural Park, in the city of Vila Velha, in the Espírito Santo State, Brazil. We evaluated the structure of shrub and tree components by sampling 80 plots of 5 × 25 m each, equally distributed among four forest types (well-drained, transitional, flo… Show more

“…The WT was the most important driver of the restinga communities' taxonomic composition (table 1). The sensitivity to WT was also observed in plant communities from the Amazonian basin (Schietti et al, 2014) and was previously reported the changing of restinga forests structure and diversity along flooding gradient (Magnago, Martins, Schaefer, & Neri, 2013).…”

“…Moreover, as salinity was recently reported to distinguish restinga forests from others environmentally marginal habitats of Atlantic Forest (Neves et al 2017), we may conclude that Na plays a key role in the system functioning, as has been observed in other topical forests (Kaspari et al 2009). those reported in earlier studies of restinga plant communities (Magnago et al 2013, Rodrigues et al 2013, Melo Júnior and Torres Boeger 2015. Al solubility and availability is known to be related to the increase of soil acidity (Lambers et al 2008); and we found that Al availability was higher toward the wet end of the flooding gradient (Appendix S1.…”
