Allelopathy of leaf extracts of jatropha (Jatropha curcas L.)in the initial development of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) ABSTRACTThe objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of extracts obtained from leaves of Jatropha curcas L. on germination and initial growth of wheat. The aqueous and alcohol (ethanol and methanol) extracts of dried leaves were prepared in the concentration of 50 mg/mL. From the crude extract were made dilutions and obtained different concentrations. Some of the aqueous extracts tested were autoclaved. Over seven days, the germination characteristics and growth of wheat seedlings were evaluated with the different treatments. There was no effect of aqueous extracts on percentage of seed germination, however the methanolic and ethanolic extracts 5% affected the germination of a cultivar in study. There was a decrease in the germination speed index when the seeds were incubated with crude aqueous extract and methanol extract. The extracts affected the growth of seedlings and the most phytotoxic was the ethanol extract 5%. The autoclaved extracts promoted a reduction in all parameters evaluated. The results presented here show the extracts of dried leaves of jatropha promoted allelopathic effects on wheat. Key words: extract, interference, germination, growth of seedlings. The search for and identifi cation of new molecules for the development of herbicides has grown in recent decades. With the objective of developing effi cient, environmentally friendly herbicides, we evaluated the phytotoxic activity of 13 synthetic chalcones on the development of sesame Sesamum indicum L. and brachiaria Urochloa decumbens (Stapf) R.D. Webster. Growth experiments were conducted at 30°C within a photoperiod of 12 hours. The positive control was distilled water whereas the negative control was the herbicide Glyphosate®. Two chalcones (3,13) signifi cantly inhibited the growth of the target species, being this inhibition comparable to that produced by Glyphosate®. The inhibitory eff ects of these chalcones on the growth of sesame and brachiaria deserves deeper investigation, since the methodology for their synthesis is simple and the reagents employed are of low cost, what make their large-scale production economically viable. Also, these molecules do not produce toxic residues such as those generated by synthetic herbicides.

RESUMO -O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a infl uência da concentração do extrato de L. multifl orum Lam.sobre o desempenho fi siológico de sementes e sobre o metabolismo antioxidante de plântulas de alface. Os tratamentos foram as concentrações de 0; 2; 4; 6 e 8 % do extrato aquoso de folhas. Foram avaliados a germinação, primeira contagem de germinação, índice de velocidade de germinação, condutividade elétrica, emergência de plântulas, massa seca total de plântulas, conteúdo de peróxido de hidrogênio, peroxidação de lipídeos, atividade das enzimas, superóxido dismutase, catalase e ascorbato peroxidase. O extrato de L. multifl orum afeta negativamente o desempenho fi siológico de sementes e plântulas de alface. O aumento da concentração do extrato ocasiona elevação na atividade das enzimas antioxidantes, as quais não foram efi cazes para reverter o efeito tóxico do extrato, o que pode ser evidenciado pelo aumento da peroxidação lipídica e conteúdo de peróxido de hidrogênio.Palavras-chave: azevém, enzimas, Lactuca sativa L., toxicidade ABSTRACT -Action of Lolium multifl orum extract on physiological attributes of lettuce seeds and seedlings. The aim of this study was to evaluate concentrations of L. multifl orum extract on the physiological performance of seeds and on the antioxidant metabolism of lettuce seedlings. The treatments were concentrations of 0; 2; 4; 6 and 8% of the aqueous leaf extracts. Germination, fi rst germination count, germination speed index, electric conductivity, seedling emergence, total seedling dry mass, hydrogen peroxide content, lipid peroxidation, enzyme activity, superoxide dismutase, catalase, and ascorbate peroxidase were evaluated. L. multifl orum extract negatively aff ects the physiological performance of seeds and lettuce seedlings. An increase in the concentration of the extract elevates the activity of the antioxidant enzymes, which were not eff ective in reversing the toxic eff ect of the extract. This can be evidenced by the increase of lipid peroxidation and hydrogen peroxide content.
