Research on allelopathic interactions can be useful in the search for phytotoxins produced by plants that may be employed as natural herbicides. The aim of this study was to assess the phytotoxic action of aqueous leaf extract of Blepharocalyx salicifolius, Myrcia multiflora, Myrcia splendens and Myrcia tomentosa on the germination and development of three weeds. The working hypothesis was that leaf extracts of Myrtaceae may negatively influence the development of weed species. Aqueous leaf extracts at 5 and 10% (g mL -1 ) were tested on the germination and growth of Euphorbia heterophylla, Echinochloa crus-galli and Ipomoea grandifolia and compared with the herbicide oxyfluorfen and distilled water (control). The most extracts caused pronounced delays in seed germination and inhibited the growth of seedlings of E. heterophylla; I. grandifolia and E. crus-galli, with the last target species had no growth shoot inhibited by the extracts. In this study, the potential and efficiency of the tested aqueous leaf extracts were evident because they were more phytotoxic to the weeds than the herbicide. Thus, the aqueous extracts of leaves from Myrtaceae species show potential for the isolation of active compounds that can be used for the production of natural herbicides in the future.Efeito fitotóxico de extrato foliar aquoso de quatro espécies de Myrtaceae sobre três espécies infestantes de cultura RESUMO. Estudos relacionados à interações alelopáticas podem ser úteis na busca por fitotoxinas produzidas por plantas que podem ser empregadas como herbicidas naturais. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a atividade fitotóxica de extratos aquosos de folhas de Blepharocalyx salicifolius, Myrcia multiflora, Myrcia splendens e Myrcia tomentosa sobre a germinação e o desenvolvimento de três plantas infestantes de culturas agrícolas. A hipótese testada neste trabalho foi que extratos foliares de Myrtaceae podem influenciar negativamente sobre o desenvolvimento de espécies infestantes de cultura. Foram testados os extratos foliares aquosos a 5 e 10% (g mL -1 ) sobre a germinação e crescimento de três espécies infestantes de cultura e comparados com o herbicida oxyfluorfen e água destilada (controle). A maioria dos extratos promoveram atrasos acentuados na germinação de sementes e inibiram o crescimento de plântulas de E. heterophylla; I. grandifolia e E. crus-galli, apenas esta última espécie alvo não apresentou inibição no crescimento de sua parte aérea pelos extratos. O presente estudo comprovou o potencial e a eficiência dos extratos, uma vez que foram mais fitotóxicos às espécies infestantes que o herbicida. Assim, extratos foliares aquosos de espécies de Myrtaceae apresentam potencial para isolamento de compostos que poderão ser usados para produção de herbicidas naturais no futuro.Palavras-chave: alelopatia, germinação, crescimento, herbicida. 242Imatomi et al.

Allelopathy contributes to the sustainable management of weeds in growing areas, due to its ability to inhibit the development of weed species. This study aimed to evaluate the allelopathic effect of Pachyrhizus erosus extract on Euphorbia heterophylla and Bidens pilosa germination. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design, in a 2 x 2 x 4 factorial scheme, with four replications. The first factor corresponded to the plant portion (shoot and tuberous root), the second to the extract preparation method (water at room temperature and boiling) and the third to the extract concentrations (0 %, 25 %, 50 % and 100 %). Phytochemical analyses were performed to identify the presence of secondary metabolites. The variables germination percentage, germination rate index and dry biomass decreased with increasing aqueous extract concentrations for both E. heterophylla and B. pilosa. When applied a P. erosus crude shoot extract (boiling), decreases of 18 % and 92 % were observed in the E. heterophylla and B. pilosa germination, respectively, with a decrease of 91 % in the dry biomass of E. heterophylla seedlings. The tuberous root extract (boiling), on the other hand, reduced the germination percentages for E. heterophylla and B. pilosa in 18 % and 80 %, respectively. The phytochemical evaluation indicated the presence of flavonoids, coumarins and saponins in the shoot and tuberous root extracts, while tannins were only observed in the shoot extract. Thus, it can be concluded that P. erosus extracts display an allelopathic effect on the weed species evaluated.

Annona glabra L. is a semi-deciduous tree that contains several active substances, including secondary metabolites, with antifungal activity. Phytopathogenic strains of the genus Pythium cause billion dollar losses all over the world on natural and crop species. Searching for eco-friendly algaecides and fungicides, we analyzed the effects of acetone extracts of A. glabra leaves on the algae Rhaphidocelis subcapitata (Korshikov) and on the oomycete Pythium aphanidermatum (Edson). We evaluated ten extract concentrations for each organism -0 to 400 mg L -1 for algae and 0-1000 µg disc 1 for oomycete. The results showed no effect on algae up to 75 mg L -1 , but a significant inhibitory effect at 125 mg L -1 and above, which reduced the growth rate and the final biomass of the algae. Extract concentrations above 200 mg L -1were completely inhibitory. The half maximal inhibitory concentration for 72 and 96 h of exposure to our crude extracts are comparable to those obtained with commercial fungicides and herbicides used in aquatic ecosystems. The P. aphanidermatum inhibition concentrations have effects comparable to fungicides as Cycloheximide and Bifonazole. Some substances isolated from the extracts are described as antifungals, which could explain part of anti-oomycete activity. Our results highlight the importance of searching bioactive compounds from plants.
