In Vitro Propagation of Heliconia bihai (L.) L. from Zygotic Embryos

Abstract: The internal morphology of embryos from immature and mature fruits of Heliconia bihai (L.) L. cv. Lobster Claw Two was examined. Embryos were inoculated into MS media (full MS and ½ MS) and GA3 (0, 2.5 and 5 mg L-1) with either sucrose or glucose. These plantlets were then replicated and transferred to MS medium (full MS or ½ MS) with 0 or 2.5 mg L-1 BAP and their multiplication was evaluated 30 and 45 days after inoculation. The genetic variability of the multiplied plants was estimated using isoenzyme analys… Show more

“…However, a cubic polynomial regression model was adjusted for the aerial part height with a tendency to increase seedlings height due to the increase in 6-BA concentrations (Figure 4). Ulisses et al (2010) also obtained greater plants length with the 2.5 mg L -1 of BAP concentration, of during the acclimatization phase of Heliconia bihai plantlets, since, according to Taiz and Zeiger (2013) the cytokinins are capable of influence the mobilization of nutrients to the leaves from other parts of the plant, establishing a new source drain relation in order to stimulate aerial part growth in plants.…”

“…For some Heliconiaceae and related species, such as those from the Zingiberaceae and Musaceae families, there are some well-defined micropropagation protocols (Rodrigues et al, 2006;Colombo et al, 2010;Ulisses et al, 2010;Iqbal et al, 2013). However, there are no works on the propagation of Heliconia bihai x Heliconia caribaea 'Jacquinii' (Figure 1).…”

“…Como técnica de propagação, a cultura de tecidos constitui-se como uma ferramenta viável para a obtenção de plantas sadias (ULISSES et al, 2010). A partir dela é possível propagar espécies que apresentem dificuldades na reprodução sexuada, produzir material vegetal em condições assépticas, uniformes e em larga escala, independente da época do ano (PINHAL et al, 2011).…”
