Our study on granitic and gneissic rock outcrops on Pedra dos Pontões in Espírito Santo state contributes to the knowledge of the vascular flora of inselbergs in southeastern Brazil. We registered 211 species distributed among 51 families and 130 genera. Orchidaceae, Bromeliaceae and Polypodiaceae were the most representative families. Concerning vegetative habit, herbs were predominant and about the preference for substrates, holorupicolous species and epiphytes were most speciose. The richest rocky habitat type was woody thicket, with 122 exclusive species. In total, 27 of the species registered in our study are cited on official lists of endangered plant species from Espírito Santo state and Brazil. In addition, two new records of angiosperms for Espírito Santo flora and two new species were recorded for the area. Our data demonstrates the importance of the area for conservation of unique biodiversity that serves as a sanctuary for a rich rupicolous flora composed of endemic and endangered species, some of which are new to science.

-(Floristic and phytosociology of three different grassland physiognomies of Southern Brazil). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the composition and structure of three different types of grassland vegetation of Southern Brazil. We aimed to discuss the floristic similarities among these areas and the influence of the Cerrado flora in their composition. Thirty plots of 1 × 1 m were placed in each area for the quantitative sampling. Additionally, species that occurred around the plots were also collected. In total, 283 species were sampled, with 163 species in CS, 87 species in CU, and 59 in CR. 36.48% (85) of the species sampled in this study also occur in the Cerrado. The cluster analysis showed that the floristic composition of the three grassland areas is significantly different due to several factors, especially the soil water system. Th e species-area relationship (SAR) is one of the oldest and most studied ecological models, having even served as the foundation of the Th eory of Island Biogeography. Nevertheless, the relative importance of habitat heterogeneity to SAR remains poorly understood. Our aim was to test the relative importance of habitat heterogeneity to the SAR of bryophyte assemblages of soil islands of rocky outcrops in the semi-arid region of Brazil. We randomly selected 15 to 20 soil islands on each of four outcrops for a total of 59 soil islands, and calculated the area, mean depth, and number of substrates for each. We used Generalized Linear Models (GLM) to test the SAR with two models, one using species richness and another using life-form richness as the dependent variables. We found no positive relationship between area and habitat heterogeneity, nor any evidence of a SAR, such as a positive relationship between area and species or life-form richness neither between habitat heterogeneity and species richness. However, our fi ndings did show that life-form richness is related to bryophyte species richness on the soil islands. We conclude by suggesting that not only can microclimate infl uence bryophyte richness, but opportunistic colonization by bryophytes is also important.
