Vegetation changes in transition zones are still poorly studied. Changes in the vegetation structure of a savanna forest (cerradão) were assessed in the Amazon-Cerrado transition (14º42'2.3"S; 52º21'2.6"W), eastern Mato Grosso, within a period of six years (2002, 2005 and 2008). In 2002, fifty plots of 10 × 10 m were set up, where all trees with DSH30 ≥ 5 cm were measured; in 2005 and 2008 the plots were re-inventoried. In 2008, 84 species from 70 genera and 37 families were sampled; absolute density was 1,998 individuals/ha and basal area was 25.95 m2.ha-1. On the one hand, the absolute density of live individuals decreased from 2005 to 2008 (2,066 individuals/ha); on the other hand, the basal area increased in 2008 compared to 2005 (23.56 m2.ha-1) and 2002 (1,884 individuals/ha and 21.38 m2.ha-1). The species with the highest importance value in the period were Hirtella glandulosa, Tachigali vulgaris and Xylopia aromatica. Except for these three species, all other species underwent hierarchic changes in the importance value, indicating that most species frequently alternate. Community structure exhibited changes throughout the period; hence, we suggest investigations on the role of T. vulgaris in these changes, since environmental conditions caused by gap opening from the fall of senile individuals of this pioneer species with a short life cycle may contribute to community dynamics.

Natural regeneration and structure and their relationship to environmental variables were studied in three sections of a gallery forest, in Eastern Mato Grosso, Brazil (14º43′S and 52º21′W). The assumption was that natural regeneration is constrained by environmental determinants at all stages of development of the tree community. The objective was to analyse the forest structure and to verify the relationship between species distribution and abundance at different stages of regeneration and environmental variables. In each section, 47 contiguous (10x10m) permanent plots were established to sample trees (gbh≥15cm), following a systematic design. Seedlings (0.01 to 1m height), saplings (1.01 to 2m) and poles (from 2.01m height to gbh<15cm) were sampled in sub-plots of 1x1m, 2x2m and 5x5m, respectively. In each plot, soil properties, gaps projection, bamboos, rocky cover, declivity and depth of ground watertable were determined. The relationships between the environmental variables with trees and seedling communities were assessed by canonical correspondence analysis. In spite of the sections being near to each other, they presented large differences in floristics, structure and site conditions. The forest soil presented a low cation exchange capacity and a high level of Al saturation. The occurrence of bamboos and gaps and the depth of ground watertable limited the occurrence of poles and trees. The high degree of structural heterogeneity for each regeneration category was related primarily to a humidity gradient; but soil fertility (Ca+Mg) was also a determinant of seedling and sapling communities.KEYWORDS: Brazil; diversity; riparian forest; soils; tropics. O objetivo foi analisar a estrutura da floresta e verificar a relação entre a distribuição e abundância das espécies nos diferentes estágios de regeneração e entre as variáveis ambientais. Em cada seção de floresta foram estabelecidas, sistematicamente, 47 parcelas (10x10m) contíguas e permanentes para amostrar as árvores (CAP≥15cm). As plântulas jovens (0,01 a 1m de altura), as plântulas maiores (1,01 a 2m) e as arvoretas (de 2,01m de altura a CAP≥15cm) foram amostradas em sub-parcelas de 1x1m, 2x2m e 5x5m, respectivamente. Para cada parcela foram determinadas as propriedades do solo, projeção das clareiras, cobertura de bambus, rochosidade, declividade e profundidade do lençol freático. -(Restored versus reference ecosystem: case study of plant community at a riparian forest in the Cerrado region, Assis, São Paulo State, Brazil). Whether or not the structure and composition of natural ecosystems can be recovered by ecological restoration is a controversial issue, and the relative contribution of the planted species or seed sources from the vicinity has rarely been assessed. We compared the understory of a planted and a native riparian forest on the basis of density, richness and proportions of functional attributes of individuals and species. Floristic analyses included the set of species planted. After ten years, richness of the community being restored is not far from the reference, but proportions of functional attributes differ between native and planted forest. More than 30 years are estimated to recover understory density. The dominance of immigrating species (74% of individuals and 85% of species) indicates that the regional species pool has a much stronger influence than the set of species planted to build a community assembly in the forest undergoing restoration. Key words: Cerrado, natural regeneration, restoration ecology, restoration goals, riparian forest RESUMO -(Ecossistema em restauração versus ecossistema de referência: estudo de caso da comunidade vegetal de mata ciliar em região de Cerrado, Assis, SP, Brasil). Se a estrutura e a composição de espécies dos ecossistemas naturais podem ou não ser recuperadas por meio de restauração ecológica é tema controvertido, e a influência das espécies plantadas nesse processo raramente é avaliada. Comparamos a comunidade vegetal em regeneração sob mata ciliar sendo restaurada com a mata ciliar nativa e com o conjunto de espécies plantadas, pela densidade, riqueza, composição florística e atributos funcionais de indivíduos e espécies. Aos dez anos, a comunidade em restauração aproximou-se da referência em riqueza, mas diferiu em composição florística e proporção de espécies para alguns atributos funcionais. A densidade de regenerantes poderá levar mais de 30 anos para equiparação. Espécies imigrantes, não plantadas, corresponderam a 74% dos indivíduos e 85% das espécies amostradas no subosque da floresta plantada, demonstrando maior influência da diversidade remanescente na paisagem do que do conjunto de espécies plantadas na construção da comunidade em restauração.
