Abstract: RESUMO -Duas espécies da família Palmae: Euterpe edulis Mart. (palmiteiro)e Geonoma schottiana Mart. Show more

“…It should be stressed that jussara palm is a native non-domesticated species and therefore possess a larger genetic variability than usually found in horticultural plants. The lowest germination level (53%) observed in this experiment, carried out under variable climatic conditions, was similar to and higher than what was reported by Aguiar (1990), respectively in a seed germinator, with 12-hour photoperiod and 25ºC, and in greenhouse (10% germination).…”

“…Light and water are important environmental factors for seed germination, and species have distinct requirements in this regard (Baskin & Baskin ). G. schottiana seeds showed high germination rates (72%) at Ψ = 0 MPa under light conditions, similar to the results reported by Aguiar (). However, a high proportion of the seeds covered by a thick litter layer or buried in forest soil may also germinate given the only slight relative decrease in seed germination (7%) of this palm under dark conditions; in addition, our light requirement index findings indicate that G. schottiana seeds are non‐photoblastic.…”

“…In the Ψ = −0.8 MPa treatment, the experiment was terminated after 300 days only in the Petri dishes showing nil seed germination. This time period was selected because seed germination in G. schottiana starts after a period of 206 days at Ψ = 0 MPa under light (Aguiar 1990). Once the experiment finished, ungerminated seeds that were subjected to water deficits (Ψ = −0.4 and −0.8 MPa) and flooding were transferred to deionized water at Ψ = 0 MPa under light conditions to test the proportion of seeds that maintained germinability.…”
