The hypertriglyceridemic waist phenotype in young adults from the Southern Region of Brazil

Abstract: The present study aimed to assess the prevalence of the hypertriglyceridemic waist phenotype and its associated factors among subjects that have been followed up from birth. In 1982, all maternity hospitals in the city of Pelotas, in the Southern Region of Brazil, were visited and all births were recorded. Babies whose parents lived in the urban area of Pelotas were subsequently followed up on several occasions. A 22 to 23-year follow-up of this birth cohort was carried out in 2004 and 2005. The presence of th… Show more

“…There was also no association of HWP with fiber consumption, despite the recognized relation of this exposure with TG and WC 6,8 . In this study, the physical activity of weak intensity was associated with a higher prevalence of HWP, as observed by Haack and collaborators 7 in Pelotas (RS). A higher prevalence of HWP in overweight and obese individuals was also found, as well as in participants with lower per capita income and with a history of smoking.…”

“…Several associated factors are involved in hypertriglyceridemic waist development, such as: sedentary lifestyle, smoking, obesity, schooling, race/color and family income 7 . Adequate fiber consumption, especially from cereals, fruits, vegetables, whole grains and dried fruit, is a protective factor against cardiovascular diseases, obesity, dyslipidemias and diabetes, and also reduces the anthropometric measures such as the waist circumference (WC) 8 .…”

“…The association between HW and excess weight in the elderly has also not been reported previously. Nevertheless, several studies with different age ranges have also observed an association between excess weight and hypertriglyceridemic waist 2,6,7,25 . The elderly with HW presented global obesity as assessed by BMI.…”

“…In a study by Cabral et al 6 with hypertensive women, an association was observed between hypertriglyceridemic waist and smoking, overweight, hypercholesterolemia, diabetes mellitus and decreased HDL (high-density lipoprotein) cholesterol. Moreover, the hypertriglyceridemic waist is also related with physical inactivity, skin color, family income, intake of fats and high BMI (body mass index) 7 . However, until now, no population-based studies have examined the relationship between hypertriglyceridemic waist and associated factors in the elderly.…”
