This paper presents pigment-based chemotaxonomy as a rapid method for the analysis of seagrass epiphyte communities and how that data may be applied to the assessment of the full seagrass ecosystem. Pigments-based chemotaxonomy uses diagnostic pigments to determine the biomass, using chlorophyll-a as a proxy, of microalgal taxa within phytoplankton or epiphyte communities. Seagrass samples were taken from Florida Bay, USA and around the southern tip of Eleuthera Island in the Bahamas.Data is presented which reveals. A. The need for care during sampling in order to avoid losing epiphytes due to sloughing, B. Consideration of the exact site of sampling with a given area, C. Variations in epiphyte production and community makeup with respect to time of year, D. Epiphyte loading variations along the length of a seagrass blade, E. Potential effects of light (top-down) and grazing (bottom-up) on epiphyte communities, F. The importance of diatoms on the seagrasses and macro-algae of Florida Bay, G. The use of epiphytometers to monitor epiphyte production versus time, and H. The strong variation in epiphyte communities around the southern tip of Eleuthera Island.All of these results and discussion are presented in order to reveal the application of pigment-based chemotaxonomy and epiphytometers (aka fake seagrass) in the assessment of seagrass epiphyte communities

Objective: This study aimed to identify the nurses' knowledge about the ecosystem approach in the Intensive Therapy Unit (ITU). Method: Characterized as a descriptive-exploratory research, with a qualitative approach. The subjects were three nurses who worked more than one year in this space in Santa Maria, RS. The data was collected in August and September 2011. We used thematic analysis to examine the research findings. Results: In the categorization two themes emerged: Ecosystem Approach in the Intensive Therapy Unit and Intensive Therapy Unit as a healthy and sustainable environment. It was emphasized that the knowledge-based ecosystem paradigm enables the understanding of complex space activities of the ITU through the interactions of its constituents. Conclusion: Thus, a systemic view, when considering the multiple dimensions of the integral elements of that space / environment and their interactions, it is appropriate to enhance the dynamics of the constant changes in this workspace. RESUMOObjetivo: O estudo objetivou identificar o conhecimento dos enfermeiros acerca da abordagem ecossistêmica em Unidade de Terapia Intensiva (UTI). Métodos: Caracterizou-se como pesquisa de caráter descritivo-exploratório de abordagem qualitativa. Os sujeitos foram três enfermeiros que atuavam a mais de um ano nesse espaço em Santa Maria, RS. A coleta ocorreu em agosto e setembro de 2011. Utilizou-se a análise temática para examinar os achados da pesquisa. Resultados: Na categorização emergiram duas temáticas: Abordagem Ecossistêmica em Unidade de Terapia Intensiva e Unidade de Terapia Intensiva como ambiente saudável e sustentável. Destacou-se que o conhecimento com base no paradigma ecossistêmico possibilita a compreensão das complexas atividades do espaço da UTI por meio das interações dos seus elementos constituintes. Conclusão: Assim, a visão sistêmica, ao considerar as múltiplas dimensões dos elementos integrantes desse espaço/ambiente e suas interações, é apropriada para potencializar a dinamicidade das constantes mudanças nesse espaço de trabalho. Protection of Complex Network Systems From Targeted Attacks and Non-Target Lesions

A comparative analysis of structural and flow approaches to study the vulnerability of complex network systems (NS) from targeted attacks and non-target lesions of various types is carried out. Typical structural and functional scenarios of successive targeted attacks on the most important by certain criteria system elements are considered, and scenarios of simultaneous group attacks on the most important NS's components are proposed. The problem of system lesions scale from heterogeneous negative influences is investigated. It was confirmed that the flow approach allows us to obtain a much more realistic picture of such lesions consequences. It is shown that the scenarios of group targeted attacks built on the basis of on NC flow model are more optimal from the point of view of selecting attack targets than structural ones.
