BackgroundMen who have sex with men (MSM) are more vulnerable to blood-borne infections and/or sexually-transmitted infections (STI). This study was conducted to estimate the prevalences of mono and co-infections of HIV-1 and other blood-borne/STIs in a sample of MSM in Campinas, Brazil.MethodsResponding Driven Sampling (RDS) was used for recruitment of MSM. Serum samples collected from 558 MSM were analyzed for the presence of serological markers for HIV-1, HBV, HCV, HTLV, HPV-16/18, and T. pallidum infections.ResultsThe highest prevalences of infection in serum samples were found for HPV-16 and 18 (31.9% and 20.3%, respectively). Approximately 8% of the study population showed infection with HIV-1, and within that group, 27.5% had recently become infected with HIV-1. HBV infection and syphilis were detected in 11.4% and 10% of the study population, respectively, and the rates of HTLV and HCV infection were 1.5% and 1%, respectively. With the exception of HTLV, all other studied infections were usually found as co-infections rather then mono-infections. The rates of co-infection for HCV, HPV-18, and HIV-1 were the highest among the studied infections (100%, 83%, and 85%, respectively). Interestingly, HTLV infection was usually found as a mono-infection in the study group, whereas HCV was found only as a co-infection.ConclusionsThe present findings highlight the need to educate the MSM population concerning their risk for STIs infections and methods of prevention. Campaigns to encourage vaccination against HBV and HPV could decrease the rates of these infections in MSM.

RESUMOO estudo consiste de uma pesquisa qualitativa que teve como objetivos analisar a opinião dos profissionais de saúde do Centro de Testagem e Aconselhamento/Serviço de Atendimento Especializado (CTA/SAE) sobre o aconselhamento dispensado às pessoas que vivem com vírus T-linfotrópico humano dos tipos I e II (HTLV I/II) e identificar as facilidades ou dificuldades na realização desse aconselhamento. Foi realizado na cidade de Santo Antônio de Jesus -Bahia -Brasil, no CTA/ SAE, tendo como informantes oito profissionais de saúde. Como estratégia de coleta de informações foi utilizada a entrevista semiestruturada guiada por um roteiro. As informações advindas das entrevistas foram analisadas por meio da análise de conteúdo temático conforme proposta de Minayo. A ética permeou todo o processo da pesquisa, conforme a Resolução 196/96 do Conselho Nacional de Saúde. Os resultados apontaram que a realização do aconselhamento acaba sendo comprometida devido à restrição de informações sobre o HTLV. É necessária a realização de capacitação para HTLV para se formarem multiplicadores de informações, mediante o incentivo à realização do conhecimento do status sorológico, para favorecer a prevenção e reduzir o índice de infecção.Palavras-chave: Aconselhamento. BACKGROUND There has been increased worldwide emphasis on the many benefits of HIV serostatus awareness for both infection prevention and improved treatment outcomes. Previous studies indicate that donors may use blood donation to be tested; the objectives of this analysis were to assess, among donors with previously undisclosed risk behavior in the 12 months before donation, the frequency of those who have previously been HIV tested and the demographic and behavioral factors associated with such testing. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS In this secondary analysis from an HIV case-control study of blood donors in Brazil, we analyzed the response to the question: “Other than blood donation, have you ever been tested for HIV?” Demographic and disclosed risk behaviors associated with previous testing were determined. RESULTS The study included 341 HIV-positive cases and 791 HIV-negative controls (1:2 case/control ratio). Overall, 31% of blood donors (40% of cases and 26% of controls) reported having been tested for HIV outside of blood donation. History of HIV testing varied according to gender, HIV status, and reported sexual risk behavior. CONCLUSION While it is encouraging that previous testing was more frequent in donors with acknowledged sexual risk behavior in Brazil, 60% still had not been tested for HIV outside of the blood donation setting. Educating donors on the importance of not using blood centers as a means to get HIV tested in Brazil, especially if they engage in higher risk behaviors but rather seek alternate testing venues, could improve the safety of donated blood.
